Gators beat Ole Miss today but right now I don't think the Gators are gong to be a big factor in the SEC. Except the SEC doesn't look overwhelming right now. Tom, about Spurrier. He was at Florida for 12 years and won consistently. Stoops was only with us 3 years and was a big factor in the 96 National Championship game. However the SEC Championships in 91, 92, 93, 94 and 95 were all won without Stoops. Tennessee won the SEC 2/3 years that Stoops was at Florida. I can't agree at all that Stoops was the reason for Spurriers success. He was a big factor the short time he was there but he ws there for only one of the 6 SEC Championships the Gators won. It was Spurriers show all the way. But his success since he left has not been that great and I don't know enough about his tenure at S. Carolina to comment on the reasons.
Clemson stands at 16-0 But this is a head: 01/17 Sat Wake Forest 3:30 01/21 Wed @UNC 9:00 01/25 Sun GaTech 7:45 01/29 Thu @VaTech 7:00 02/04 Wed Duke 9:00 02/07 Sat Florida St 7:00 Sure is going to be hard to keep the it up.
Outbound, Clemson certainly has moved out to an excellent start this season. I agree you are bound to have some losses with that schedule down the stretch. Looks like it will be an interesting season for hoop fans! NC seemed unbeatable, Duke is always tough, Michigan State played havoc with Kansas yesterday. There are a number of teams capable of winning the marbles this season. Don
Corey, Alabama basketball has never really been alive. We have always been speedbumps on Kentucky's (and now Florida's) road to SECC's and NC's.
Billy Donovan goes for win 300 Wed night at Auburn. No other Gator coach is even close to that many wins at Florida. Strange thing about our win against Ole Miss the other night. They out rebounded us 46 - 22 and we won the game. I didn't think that was even possible. This team is in for a long year I'm afraid. KP, I remember Alabama having some pretty good teams.
Tennessee is the highest ranked team in the SEC, they are ranked 24th in the AP and no SEC team is ranked in the coaches poll. Looks like a down year for the SEC right now.
Bill, It's not over for you guys yet. The P10 in football started off the year getting drubbed by the Mountain West and went unbeaten in the bowls... Perhaps you guys can turn it around come tourney time
I only caught the last couple of minutes of Tenn. Kentucky game last night but Meeks looked real. How did he get to 54?
I think your answer is a little complicated. One, this kid is the real deal. He's a very good basketball player and last night I think the basket looked like the ocean to him. He hit 10 3's and was a perfect 14-14 from the free throw line. That's 44 points right there. He did have some nice drives to the hoop as well. It was an incredible performance by a very good athlete. Second, to say Tennessee lacks a shutdown defender might be the understatement of the year. Also, this team is a little young and seems to lack a true identity on defense. They have some incredible talent but they're far from a team yet. We'll see if they can pull it together this next few weeks of the season.
Aquila, How do you think you will match up against Florida? That had to be a touch game to watch last night! Don
Why no they didn't Dave. Obviously you need a copy of the Gator Bowl. BTW, Mountain West? Didn't they get a share of the NC this year?
I don't think Tennessee is a bad team. They certainly had a bad game last night. They lack a shutdown defender at guard. This team is starting some long, athletic guys. I think they may be better suited to a zone defense but I'm not sure Pearl would do that since much of his system is predicated on playing man-to-man defense. I think Florida's Calathes could have a big game against the Vols but I think it should be a competitive game. It certainly was. It makes it even worse that my in-laws are Kentucky fans.
Corey, I think AJ must crank out copies of that game by the dozens. Boy wait until they get in a championship game again, he will buy out some stores dvd's. And I believe that game will happen.
Gators won a game that was beyond ugly last night at Auburn. Auburn missed a seasons worth of free throws but came from behind to lead in the last 5 minutes when the Gators finally pulled the game out 68 - 65. Neither team could buy a 3 pointer until late when both teams hit several down the stretch. Ugly but a conference road win is a conference road win.
Corey, We beat LSU then lose to MSU. All of those rings came as a pro. "Pretty good" is a fair description of our best basketball teams.
