You can argue resume's and early vs. late losses all you want. But the eye test should count heavily...and I would MUCH rather play Miami or even Alabama than have to play the Irish. No offense, Kyle.
Alabama isn't good enough to win the National Championship and I don't think they are one of the 12 best teams in the country, but I do think they are better than JMU, Tulane, and Duke or at least they have proven that they are during the season. I think Notre Dame and Miami are probably in the top 12. Of course, the committee just needs to admit another lie. I think they are going to punish a team for playing in their conference championship.
The problem.is the guarantees. If you say line up the best 12, then there will still be some tom-fuckery at the last few but it won't be a team that will be mud hole stomped like JMU.
SMU lost in their conference championship last year, got in the CFP and got "mud hole stomped". Just saying.
I still maintain I think the committee did the right thing by not punishing Alabama for playing in their conference championship, but I don’t think we are one of the best 12. Neither is Tulane or JMU.
No firestorm. It's a joke. They clearly punished BYU for their poor showing in a conference championship game but not Alabama. The talking heads got what they wanted. This is fine. It sets the precedent though. ND has been jerked around by these same power structures for decades. Ask we can do is learn from it and improve.
Get rid of the conf champ games... and then just rate 1-12 with no guarantees. There's no way to make everyone happy, but we'll be a LOT better off than we are today.
Alabama was ranked ahead of BYU going into the playoffs. Alabama was bumped last year by SMU, so the precedent was set then. I think ND got screwed by the rules concerning the automatic bids. Do away with conference championship games and rank the top 12 at the end of the regular season. Conspiracies are more fun.
One problem ND has is who is pounding the table on their behalf in a committee room filled with members having either a present or past relationship with a conference? It seemed pretty clear the past few weeks that the ACC was advocating on Miami’s behalf.
I agree that the change in ranking of Miami and Notre Dame when neither team played a game is suspicious. I’m not familiar with the technicalities of the agreement that ND and the ACC have but is it more advantageous for Miami to get in than it is for Miami get in in the eyes of the ACC?
Putting in Miami over ND quiets all the media crying for the head to head be the only thing that counts. It made the decision easy for the committee. C'est la vie . Beat the Aggies in South Bend and the head to head is moot.
I agree Terry but I do wonder why the head to head didn’t count last week? Does the ACC get a payoff from Miami’s playoff proceeds? Would they get a cut if Notre Dame had made it?
KP, I asked your question to Twitter’s AI platform and this is the answer I received. In Miami’s case the playoff revenue is distributed amongst the ACC teams.
In addition to ND choosing to stay home , Iowa State and Kansas State have also decided to stay home. They were both fined 500K by the Big12.
I kind of understand Notre Dame’s action but why would the other 2 ve up the money, the extra practice, and the exposure?
