Not surprising at all. I wonder who will be the next coach to fall. Slick Rick at UCLA should be fired but he's got the Bruins in the Pac12 Championship game how do you fire a guy who does that? Not to mention that basketball season has started so nobody at UCLA cares anymore.
Neil Callaway out at UAB. Reading the article the guy never really had a chance at UAB, poor fan support and the smallest recruiting budget in CUSA. Larry Porter of Memphis was fired after back to back 2-10 seasons.
LA Times was hinting this morning that Slick Rick may be fired EVEN if he beats Oregon and goes to the Rose Bowl. Saturday's 50-0 loss to USC was the third worst beating by the Trojans in the nearly 90 year history of the series... re: UCLA basketball The Bruins got wiped out in their opener by Loyola-Marymount. I think that's a girl's school downtown. Then they were obliterated by Middle Tennessee State, which is a school that nobody out here has ever heard of; and they've already suspended their star player once, for criticizing his lazy and inept teammates at practice. These are dark times in Westwood...
Poor Skippy. He was actually surprised that he got canned. You can't lose to USC 50-0 and keep that job... http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2011/11/ucla-fires-rick-neuheisel.html
How about Zook at Penn State? Good recruiter.......could possibly overcome some of the negativity and can recruit the south and the midwest/east.. Pay would be appreciably lower than the mega bucks it would take to get a mega coach to come to unHappy Valley.....if one would come at all.
Yeah a guy who couldn't win at UF and Illinois would be what the Penn State people would be looking for in their next head coach. It will be interesting which way Penn State goes, certainly before this all erupted if Joe had retired Tom Bradley would have deserved serious consideration for the job. You have to wonder though if they will make a clean break with the old staff, seems like they should but will they?
Almost certain that the whole football department is gone. Maybe a MAC coach? Rutgers? Hard position to fill other than a lesser coach. At least the Zooker is a known recruiter and a lack of recruiting is what will kill the Lion's program more than anything else.
They will be poison for a while no doubt. But they are in a hot bed of football and are really the only game in town....there are only 5 states that annually produce more D1 players than PA.....TX,CA,FL, OH and GA. They'll have lost years, but there are a whole bunch of Nits in PA and around the country who have little boys whose life dream is to be a Nittany Lion. Facilities, commitment, tradition, following and raw material..... they may go through a cycle or two of coaching hires before they find one that works, but it's only a matter of time....
Manny Diaz Texas DCoord is rumored to be in the mix for the Ole Miss Job. I hope he stays for a few more years at Texas, he's the best DCoord we've had, even better than Muschamp and Chizik.
Wazzu kicked their coach to the curb, Paul Wulf. Mike Leach, the Pirate is on the short list along with Houston's Kevin Sumlin. I saw a mention someplace of the old Oregon Coach who kicked himself upstairs to AD then quit to become a TV analyst, Mike Bellotti. It would be interesting if Bellotti ended up the WSU coach, he's a guy who could have had the USC and Ohio State jobs at one point and turned them down.
Mike Leach is the new Wazzu coach!! I'm sure Scott will want to make a trip to the Palouse to see one of his favorite coaches!!! I'll be surprised though if the Pirate doesn't win at WSU, Wulf is leaving him a better program than he got from Doba that's for sure and Leach will have several QB's onboard who can throw and that's what he needs. Plus it's not like he's used to coaching 4* and 5* players at Tech he had to make do with mostly 1*, 2* and 3* players. I think his last QB was actually pretty highly ranked but mostly his team was not a bunch of HS all-stars. He'll have the same at WSU, but Mike Price was able to put together a nice program and I'd expect Leach will be able to do so as well.
Leach is a yahoo, but I think you're right Terry; he will make WSU relevant again. His offense should work well with the type of players he'll get, and the PAC doesn't have a large number of elite defenses to stop it.
