A legend has passed. When his wife passed away a few years ago his health started deteriorating. But he was a fixture in these parts, routinely seen around the Montclair and Little Falls area just like Phil Rizzuto was seen around the Jersey shore. Ten World Championship rings. That will never happen again. Three MVPs Fifteen All Star appearances. Always smiling and pleasant. http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/sto...ew-york-yankees-legend-hall-famer-dies-age-90
I hope my dad takes this well...Yogi one of his favorites. Yogi had a great life...time to celebrate it.
There will never be another Yogi Berra, great player, and great man and a really interesting character...genuine in all aspects. RIP
We just don't have characters like Berra and Stengel anymore. They added so much to the game. When he was a player Yogi was the prototype of the ideal catcher. As I recall he really didn't care whether a pitch was in the strike zone or not, he'd hit a ball out of the dirt. We all have our favorite Yogi sayings. Mine was when he was asked about a club in one city he said "No one goes there any more, it's too crowded."
It occurred to me that he disproved the axiom that "nice guys finish last". Far more people remember him for his smile and warmth than they do for his incredible career or his military service ( he was part of the DDay landing in WWII with the Navy). " He bats from both sides of the plate. He's amphibious ".
Yogi always went to funerals of his friends, he said if you don't go to their's they won't come to yours. A variation of Yogi's observation of popular restaurants...they are so popular nobody goes there anymore. Nobody will be at Yogi's funeral, it'll be too crowded to get in.
