LOL! Ray Stevens changed our culture forever and there's no going back. True story: It's 1966 and our football team is about to exit the bus for our Friday night game at La Palma Stadium in Anaheim. Our opponent was Servite HS... ranked #1 in the nation and everwhere else on planet earth. The game was on the radio as the "Orange County High School Game of the Week." Their players were warming up near our bus. Their 6'4" HS All-American QB was taking snaps from their 6'5" center; then he would soft toss to their 6'3" HSAA WR. I already knew about the guy who would be over me. He was on the cover of Cal Prep magazine and the program listed him at 6'8"... As we exited the bus, we were trying to talk ourselves into being brave and pretending that we could actually "take these guys." Then we heard our senior captain (Greg Snyder, UCLA All-Pac-8 LB) singing a Ray Stevens song, "Please Mr. Custer, I don't want to go."
This was a little before Ray Stevens <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/F0nHWAoIfxo" frameborder="0"></iframe>
 Actually, we got wiped out 24-0. Everything went as expected. They were much better than we were. Example: Our scouting told us that they always returned a punt to the side where they set up a double-team block on the line of scrimmage. The double-team would be against either the left tackle (return to Servite's right) or a double-team against the tight end (me... a return to Servite's left.) We practiced against this all week, in the correct belief that we would have to punt a lot. Both Frank Schiro (the left OT) and myself got very good at defeating double-team blocks by the time we got to Anaheim... The first time we had the ball, we went three-and-out and were forced to punt. Two huge gorillas, with hair coming out of the earholes of their helmets and fire in their eyes lined up over me, so I knew the punt return was coming to my side. As the ball was snapped, I was only half way out of my stance when the gorillas drove me three yards back, then pancaked me flat and landed on me. The punt was returned more than thirty yards. The tackle was finally made by Greg Snyder...no thanks to me or Frank, who spent the play star gazing from the safety of the grass... BTW- Frank is a history teacher/coach too up in NoCal. He just retired...
