A pretty nice pictorial site of great pics from WWII, this is my favorite of the bunch which shows Americana at its best... http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/2011/09/world-war-ii-the-north-african-campaign/100140/
That had to be a brutal campaign with the sand and heat. BTW this photo looks like a forerunner of JO'Co's mini Sherman Tank!
I call shotgun on Jo'Co's tank, I like the look of the guy holding the gun and besides I am not sure where Jim might take me... Looking at the pictures which are moments in time in my reasoning give me appreciation for the time period I am in... No matter the debt crisis or any other crisis I have experienced as a citizen of the United States we have it easy... Maybe too easy in all honesty and the outcome is we outside our military have forgotten the effort it takes to be a "Free Society"
Looking at the top picture I had to chuckle at the guy on the wing. With all of our over the top safety procedures can you imagine that happening today...Hell he would be tasered by homeland security for dangerous activity as a terrorist...
re: safety back then My parents met during WWII when my father was stationed at March Field Army Air Force Base in Riverside, CA, where my mother worked as a civilian. They had lots of photos of their "flying dates", which were pretty breath-taking. My favorite was a photo taken from a B-26 in 1944 directly over my mother's house in Chino. According to both of my parents, in a story they repeated many times, the photo was taken from the open bomb bay doors of the bomber. They were having a picnic with another couple onboard and all four young people were eating lunch with their feet dangling over the edge as they looked down through the bomb bay to Chino, California below...
