Well I'm up early so might as well get this started. What a wild Saturday, this is why college football is so much fun! 1. Stanford/USC, Eddie O get's another victory, only the mighty Irish have been able to slow him down! Is Pat Haden really going to pay Kevin Sumlin 6M/year when he can get Eddie O for chump change? As I said in another topic in what world in 2005 would you have had to live on (Bizzaro World) to imagine USC bedlam and rushing of the field after a victory over Stanford! 2. Georgia/Auburn...what an ending, the Miracle of Jordan-Hare was born yesterday. It's not the first tipped pass that went for a TD, how about the Miracle in Lincoln a couple of weeks ago. But hey they never get old and you never stop scratching your head as to why the defenders didn't just bat the pass down. 3. Michigan continues the Northwestern Death Spiral. The Wildcats were once 5-0 and ranked in the top 25, then they played a great game down to the wire with the Buckeyes and lost and can't stop losing, even if it takes some miracle play by the opponent. Northwestern had several near game ending INT's vs Michigan, but they didn't close the deal, and Michigan to it's credit was able to run their FG team on the field without a TO and get it off to send the game in to OT. I can't believe that they got everybody set before they hiked the ball to the holder, but no flags...so I guess they did. 4. Texas....the dream pretty much died yesterday. Case McCoy comes back down to earth and throws 3 picks. OSU crushed the Longhorns, the stands were pretty much empty by the 4th Qtr. Goodbye Mack, I'll bet there will be huge gaps in the crowd on Thanksgiving night when Texas Tech comes to town and Baylor will probably finish us off..I thought we had a shot at wining out but now we'll probably lose the rest of them. 5. Baylor/Texas Tech. If you looked at the Score you'd think...blowout. But that was an awesome football game, fast, hard hitting and inspite of the points put up there was some great defense played. There was also a couple of those stupid un-sportsmanlike penalties that you know drive coaches nuts, they know when the kid does it that they are getting the flag. The first one was on a Baylor kid who'd just recovered a fumble and got up out of the pile clutching the football and rolled/spun the football like he was throwing dice...FLAG. The second was on a Texas Tech kid who got a strip fumble recovery and got up running towards his sideline and half way there spiked the football...FLAG. OK I get the whole sportsmanship thing, but really this is out of control and has been for awhile. Back to the game...Baylor is just fun to watch, they fly all over the field on both sides of the ball. I'm not sure if they are as good as Oregon, but they are fun to watch. Plus Kudos to Texas Tech, they not only have a true freshman at QB, he's a walkon! He's pretty good. I dare say he's better than a lot of upper classmen at Div 1 programs...cough Case McCoy. 6. Fla/USC...Pain was forecast but a tight hard fought football game broke out. Gators lose with 1 arm tied behind their backs, barely 100yds passing. Can you imagine the Gators with Johnny Football? 7. Bama...another workman like victory. Lou Holtz once said you only had a limited number of games every year that you could get your team fired up to play their very best. Bama isn't wasting them. Roll Tide. 8. Boise State...48-7 I'm sure there is a history lesson there some place!! 9. Michigan State/Neb... MSU was 0 fer Big Red till yesterday. Took care of the Huskers in Lincoln. MSU peaking at the right time, could be a very interesting game vs OSU in the B1G championship game if nobody stumbles. 10. Chollie Weis....Gets his first B12 victory ever, throwing 20 Gals of Gatorade on Charlie is like me tossing a dixie cup on Sid! Charlie wins in an uncharacteristically Charlie way...pounding the rock. He went Stanford on WVA. Students rush the field and tear down the goal posts, luckily nobody was hurt...seriously that is a very dangerous move by students. 11. Wazzu...only 1 more win needed to be bowl eligible!! Good win on Sat vs Rich Rod. Utah and the Puppies up next. 12. Duke/Miami...I had Duke for the upset but I didn't put a lot of points on it. Never figured they would put up nearly half a hundred on the Hurricanes though. Great job by David Cutliffe, Ole Miss should have never let him go. Not a lot will change for the BCS, some shuffling below the leaders. Bama will still be #1, FSU solid at #2, Ohio State will remain #3, and Baylor will creep up to #4. Baylor still has some very tough games left, more than Ohio State, I could envision them passing the Buckeyes if they win out. Pac12 is now a dogfight and they are out of the BCS, it's all about the Rose Bowl now. I wonder if Arizona State can pull it off and win the Pac12 now? The B12 is now a dogfight as well with Ok State controlling their destiny, beat Baylor and OU and they win and go to the Fiesta Bowl and ruin the Baylor season. That should be an awesome game.
Unbelievable play for Auburn to win. Gators played as well as they have in some weeks. I would love to have a Johnny Football. We do have a guy named Grier coming in as an early entry. He is supposed to be a very good passer. Baylor just keeps winning. Kp, FSU is not going to pass Bama. Weis probably had his job saved with that win.
I will comment on Bill's comments. I saw a replay of the tipped pass. I agreed with Terry in another topic that not batting it down is not smart. I was impressed with Florida and am mystified that they've lost 5 in a row. SC just plain willed that win. Clearly, FL's offense is lacking balance, but that RB is very good. I also was impressed with the team speed and the open-field tackling by both teams, something ND does not do well. Funny. Other teams score 50-60 points and it's style points. Baylor's offense is geared for 50-60 points each game. I don't care how many points FSU scores, the only way they leap over Bama is a Bama loss. I'm guessing that the Kansas win won't save Weis' job.
1. USC/Stanford This didn't really surprise me. SC has the horses to slow Stanford's O to even more of a crawl. AND... to force mistakes. The question was: did they have enough to scratch out a few more points? At the end... they got Hogan to make the critical error, and then it was just up to the kicker's foot. NOTE: Hayden won't be getting Sumlin. The Aggie brass are in the process of locking him down for a long time. 2. Georgia/Auburn Georgia didn't deserve to win this game - they are lazy, and undisciplined. But I guess the WAY Auburn backed into it at the end just irritated me more. Going for an INT on 4th down is poor play at best, and selfish at worst. 3. Michigan/NW I didn't get to see much of this one. I doubt they actually got everyone set before the snap but was impressed that they got it off at all. I almost feel for NW... but not really. 4. Texas C'mon Terry. A big win at the end can still save Mack. Curious... after Saban turns you down, who do you think it would be?? 5. Baylor/Texas Tech. Tech's defense is as bad as A&M's... Baylor is a pretender in the mold of the best Mike Leach teams from Lubbock They score a lot on weak teams, but the first time they get punched in the mouth they will fold like a cheap suit. If only they had to play an actual top 10 team. But they don't. Lord help them if they stumble into a game with the top 4. 6. Fla/USC... I had to watch in spurts. I really thought UF was going to pull it out when they got the second TD. At least they have an offense to finish out the year. It's not dynamic but does give the defense a blow. 7. Bama/MSU Bama made enough mistakes for 3 games, but still won. MSU isn't good, but they are big and tough. Not enough skill in the skill positions, but they can bludgeon teams that aren't built like Bama. I would say I don't see why Saban keeps letting Yeldon fumble but then the speedy kid behind him did as well... Guess everybody wanted in on the act. 8. Boise State... didn't see it. 9. Michigan State/Neb... Every time NU looked like they were going to get in MSU's face... they slammed the door. If MSU had a "Good" QB, they would be big trouble. As it is... too inconsistent to beat OSU. 10. Chollie Weis....I flashed over to this one a few times. God, it must suck to be from WVU. 11. Wazzu...Kesley is VERY perky! "So you're saying there's a chance?" 12. Duke/Miam I didn't get to watch it, but I'm not totally surprised Duke won. It was a hit for UM to lose their stud RB. I was surprised by how many points Duke put up! I still say there's no way that 7th grade offense Auburn runs will beat Nick's defense, but they seem to be living the charmed life this season. My prediction: Saban and Co go into Auburn and throttle them like every other team that doesn't have JFF behind center...
The marketing slogan for the Pac12 should be 'This is why we can't have nice things' which is also the name of an album released by the Stanford band. O has the kids at USC believing and they are getting better each week. I don't know if he's the guy to be their HC, but I do think that they should never let him go. He 'gets' them and has proven over 2 different staffs to be an invaluable member to Troy. He's also a recruiting machine. Texas is not good. West Virginia is worse. Boise State should have joined the Big12, there's the history lesson. Georgia-Auburn is one of my favorite rivalry games. It's always fun and this year's contest didn't disappoint. The B1G is really bad this year. What the hell is going on? Minnesota is 8-2 (same as Wisconsin) and Duke is 8-2 in control of their own destiny in the division.
Baylor jumps the Buckeyes in the AP poll. However the AP poll has no effect on the BCS poll. I stand by my prediction that they move to #4 no higher. FWIW if the Aggies win out and get an at large BCS bid, I would love to see them take on an undefeated Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl. I'd put my money on the Bears.
Baylor closing on Ohio State in the BCS. Maybe a good win next week over Oklahoma State while the Buckeyes take on Indiana. But without losses from the top 2 it doesn't really mean much.
Terry, are you saying an OSU upset of the Hoosiers won't help the Buckeyes in the polls?  P.S. The IU defense is an embarrassment. They've given up massive yardage to every single opponent. We're talking 5, 6, 700+ yards total offense. Ohio State must be licking their chops. Talk about style points!
I was shocked the way Wisconsin man handled the Hoosiers Saturday? While I realize their defense has been porous, the offense has been very solid for the most part. Ohio State really will not be in contention for the BCS title game, but it looks like we probably will be matched against MSU for the B1g Ten Championship game. If we win there, it appears Oregon and the Buckeyes will meet in the Rose Bowl.
The Buckeyes are obligated to score 50+ this week against IU. If they can score 70, even better. One of these weeks Baylor is sure to score in the 40s. Aren't they?
Oh yeah? I'll bet you right now that the best losing team in America can hold the noles to no more than 45.
MCG/Bill are you guys hearing that Muschamp had a lockeroom meltdown and then went off on fans in a post game interview?
I know he did have a verbal altercation with a fan after the Georgia game that he has apologized for and he hit a chalkboard in frustration after the SC game after which he showed up for his TV show with a bandaged hand. RE: the chalkboard.... glad to see he cares about losing but sad that it has gone so far as to cause such frustration.
RE: other games... Lost much of my fire to make CFB a must see event after the UF-Vandy game. Was with friends and my wife on the water in Dunedin, Fl. this past Sat. with shorts and flip flops on watching a very good live band and drinking lots of margaritas and even some Patron shots. Did manage to see the Gators lose to SC from another bar later but of course the pain was deadened somewhat by then.... Some observations: Would hate to be a Georgia fan this season.....almost.... but not quite as bad a feeling as being a Gator fan. Would hate to be in Ohio State's position..... damned frustrating if you go 25-0 under Meyer and can't play for the title.... I'm sure the 4 team playoff can't get here soon enough for you. Don't think Michigan is the team to derail the Buckeyes..... but just possibly MSU could be a tough out. FSU looks like a juggernaut the likes of which we have never seen in Tally. Bama wins..... no surprise there..... that's what they do. Ed Orgeron to Texas? Didn't think Miami was an elite team..... UF should have beat the Canes.... but the Gators lose at will these days to just about anyone that put's up resistance.
There is more talk and very positive talk about Nick Saban to Texas, reportedly has had meeting with big boosters at Alabama and told them he's going, they tried to get him to say what it would take to get him to stay and he said he's ready for a change and will be going.
Well here's the thing. 1. It's true or 2. No one will ever let you live down the Saban to Texas rumors. It will be worse than the 'It's Gruden'/Notre Dame thing.
Basketball season is now under way. Irish, North Carolina and Michigan were all upset this weekend. Lot of parity in basketball, the little guys have good players as well, better come ready to play.
Ohio State defeated Marquette Saturday, ending their 27 home court winning streak, longest in Division 1 in recent years. Buckeyes held them to 32 points, 19% shooting for the game.
