I'm not shocked at the Richt firing, not that he deserved it, but it's been talked about for 2 years now that UGA alumns are not happy with the lack of conference championships, SEC East Championships, and never even sniffing a Nat'l Championship. I was listening to a College Sports talk show and they were saying that UGA is one of the best jobs in America. That Georgia has a ton of HS talent and no real instate competitor other than Ga.Tech and that Georgia can dip down into Fla for talent as well as surrounding states. That given the talent level they should be doing better.
Yeah I'm sure being a Georgia Alum will make Smart a candidate for that job. I'm not sure Kiffin has been rehabilitated enough yet to get a job.
Apparently there was some bad blood between Smart and UGA a couple of years ago. He was going to be the DC at UGA and then changed his mind and stayed at Alabama. He may not be a candidate. I don't think Kiffin will go to UGA but there are so many openings this year, it would not surprise me if someone hired him. :?
It's getting very crowded these days..... Coaching openings, now 15 vacancies Georgia, Maryland, Memphis, Miami, Mizzou, North Texas, Rutgers, South Carolina, Syracuse, Toledo, Tulane, UCF, ULM, USC, Virginia
Ralph, a guy I follow on Twitter whose son goes to Bowling Green retweeted this: I never heard of the guy before I read your post. Then 5 minutes later I saw the above.
Georgia is one of the best jobs in college football. They basically own the state of Georgia other than the few who escape to Alabama, Auburn or Tech. They nab kids from Florida, and they raid South Carolina like they're Vikings. They are the show in town. Tech is like Duke in that they are their own thing. The boosters and alumni will literally do whatever it takes to win. The campus is one of the most beautiful in the nation. The stadium is top notch. There is literally nothing about this job that sucks, aside from all the perks of the job taking away any excuse for not winning the title. BTW, they fired a good man and a great coach. They could step in a pile if they aren't careful.
Scott Frost just took the UCF job. Good training ground for his triumphant return to the Motherland right A.J.? Dino Babers back in the hopeful pool! Richt reportedly set to interview for the Miami job along with Dan Mullen. With Fuente at Va.Tech now, and Tom Herman reportedly close to signing a new deal with Houston, I wonder who So.Carolina will go after? Maryland reportedly interested in the Temple coach. Will be a ton of rumors...also likely along with 5-7 teams in the bowls there will be more than a few teams in bowls with skeleton crews coaching them due to the HC bolting for more money/prestige.
Supposedly its Richt, Mullen and Schiano as the finalist at Miami with one report of an offer of a four year deal for $16million to Richt.... Not going to hold my breathe though!!
Well ESPN says Kirby Smart is going to UGA barring anything weird. Guess it'll be announced after the SECCG...
Terry, what do you think of this: There's some quiet speculation that Tom Herman is staying at Houston as unofficial coach in waiting for Strong's exit after next year. Hmmmm...
Miami would do very well to get Richt. It's not the SEC.... a little bit of an easier road in general and his only real nemesis annually is FSU.
Well Herman is the overwhelming choice of Texas fans and many would like to see him next year. So his contract extension with Houston could be his way of waiting to see what happens next year at Texas before he makes any other moves. It's going to be tough for Charlie next year, baring some epiphany at QB it's still going to be a problem for him to have a winning record. But it seems like if Houston is smart that they will trade him higher salary for a higher buyout as well. Maybe not quite like the deal between Sumlin and A&M but still might be tough unless Texas is willing to pay his buyout. But he's in a good position right now. I think Houston will beat Temple, and win that AAC and then go to a New Years 6 bowl. What a first year. The risk for him of course is that he's very hot right now and probably could move into a Power 5 job, but what if he is 8-4 next year or worse...then he might have missed his opportunity. Crystal Ball is what he and his advisors need right now!
Nobody is really talking about it but the next move the Univ of Texas needs to make is to decide on an Athletic Director. Mike Perrin who is the interim AD was a player and subsequently a very successful plaintiffs attny. He has no experience in being an Athletic Director. He loves Texas that's for sure and wants the best for all the Longhorn sports programs. I just don't know if that is enough, the guy at Mich that was eventually removed loved Michigan and no doubt wanted the best for them, he was also a successful businessman, the guy they replaced him with was similar and they did it on an interim basis. I see that UM is now looking for a Perm Ath.Director. But back to Texas. We need a real Athletic Director with experience in collegiate Athletics. Then we can take care of Charlie Strong, either terminating him because he's failed or giving him his Kudo's because he turned things around finally.
I read this morning that M is doing a nationwide search to find a new AD. The only thing I find that may have made Perrin no suitable for the job was that he was an attorney for plaintiffs. Swarbrick didn't have any AD experience did he?
