OK I didn't know that was his nick name. The only guy I knew of who was called and is still called "The Jet" is former UNC and Houston Rocket Kenny Smith. http://kennythejetsmith.com/ Will he sign a Rooty Bird for me?
THANKSGIVING DAY, 1971 Lyle Bresmer Call Joe Wylie in to kick. Wylie stands at his own 24, waits for the snap … Rodgers deep for Nebraska. Here’s Wylie’s kick. It’s high. It holds up there. Rodgers takes the ball at the 30. … He’s hit and got away … back upfield to the 35, to the 40 … he’s to the 45! … he’s to the 50, to the 45! … to the 40, to the 35 ... to the 20! .. to the 10! .. he’s ALL THE WAY HOME! (Crowd roars) HOLY MOLY! Man, woman and child, did that put ‘em in the aisles! Johnny The Jet Rodgers just tore ‘em loose from their shoes!
I remember Joe Wylie, he was a Texas turncoat! I would have never been able to guess who that OU player was without Googling though. Greg Pruitt who just happened to finish 2nd in the '72 Heisman. Maybe he'd have won if he'd made the tackle! He had a great NFL career.
I was the old Houston Aero's 1,000,000th fan. Gordie, Mark and Marty Howe were playing. When I was out on the Ice, Gordie was there with me. He asked me what I did and I said I was a dentist...he gave me a toothless grin. True story.
Look at that form!! BTW, 25 lbs is what the Heisman weighs....Johnny said 55.....you ain't that big pal....
I asked him about that punt return in the GOTC....he said they had been planning on Pruitt being right there during the punts......Johnny said Devaney's plan was simple...."Whatever you gotta do to make him miss the tackle Johnny"....now that's good ol coaching right there....
