It would be very easy for me to just tack this onto the "I R Smrt" topic MCG created. But forget that this kid is from Florida. When are college athletes going to finally use the intelligence God gave them... or did he forget? Another college idiot screws up his life! I didn't go looking for this... didn't have to. GoVolsXtra.com reported the Orlando Sentinel link provided above. I get the RSS feed from that source.
While it's certainly not very 'smrt".....I don't think it relates well enough to tack it on to the topic I started. In any event in light of the Carlos Dunlap incident last December I'll bet Mr. Hammond gets a pretty serious response from Meyer.
I got these three articles all off of Sportsline this morning. It's the time of year that this stuff happens and I think it will continue to happen with young men in the age group of college football players. What we can hope is that they learn by the experience and become better people. These were all over the last few days. Florida's Hammond Suspended Arkansas FB Arrested For DUI Ga Tech DE Charged With Batter Of His Girlfriend
I agree, we are going to see more of this unfortuneately. Did you guys see the Vince Young incident? Apparently somebody was trash talking VY about Texas and flashed the upside down Hook'em horns sign and that was it! VY goes nuts
Why would a person taunt a 6'5" 230 pound athlete? That guy deserved what he got from VY. VY gets a 500$ fine, but his real problem is going to be with Roger Goddell who is determined to stop this sort of thing.
This is the tip of the iceberg. The problem is that non-athletes are doing the same thing. It just does not get publicized like it does with athletes. In far too many cases, the alcohol consumption to excess continues throughout their lives. Alcohol ruins lives and all too often it is innocent lives that had nothing to do with the consumption of the alcohol.
Terry, Watch the last 15 to 20 seconds of the video. Why do we do this? Class C misdemeanor citation and they are putting homicide detectives to work on this. Are you telling me that there are no cold cases they could be working? All is well in Dallas that can afford the use of these resources for such a small offense???
Homicide detectives??? I mean I can see why there needs to be some investigation, if you are going to charge him with a crime (even a misdemeanor) some cursory investigation would have to be done if for no other reason than to complete the paper work. But Homicide detectives?
Dave, I don't want to start a battle here. Do you remember what my biggest gripe against Fulmer was? Do you remember how I publicly stated that I would back off of my public outrage of Fulmer's problems if he would stop the off the field issues? This was during your campaign of berating Tennessee for the same off the field issues that now other schools are seeing. Fulmer took our only experienced punter off the field. He benched Colquitt without the possibility of competing until the court case was decided. He served a two game suspension after the completion of the case. He wound up sitting out half the season. For that, I said that I personally would give Fulmer three years to turn the program around. The administration didn't see it the same way that I did. I'm not advocating that these kids need to miss half the season. I am advocating that the penalties get tougher until we see an indication that they are getting it. So far, I'm not seeing that they are. We are getting closer and closer to the inmates running the asylum.
Typically these kids get suspended for the summer and then in August the coach says that so and so has shown remorse and has done everything that has been asked of him and deserves a 2nd chance. If the players transgressions are closer to the start of the season they will sit him out of the first game of the season before deciding he's been punished enough. At least Booby Bowden was honest when discussing this, he admitted that he didn't think it was fair to punish the whole team by sitting a top player that the team needed to win games.
Tom, especially in light of what happened with Dunlap I think Meyer should and will punish Hammond pretty severely. The dumbass Dunlap did his the week of the biggest game of the season.....talking about disruption to a team's focus. I'll go on record as saying Meyer was too lenient letting him play in the Sugar Bowl.
I agree and think you backed up what I said. It will continue to happen. I didn't mean we shouldn't hope they get help but that it is not going to go away.
Tom, I guess I'm not clear as to what you want to see and where you want to see it. Inmates running the asylum? Are you referring to Florida? If so how would you want Meyer to do different with Hammond? If you are talking in general then perhaps you are right.
Absolutely not. I went out of my way to state: I did not want this to become that kind of "war". The asylum is College Football. The inmates are the athletes. The guards are the coaching staffs. This is MY reason that makes me believe in the inmates running the asylum comment: Coaching staffs have been consistently lenient to keep prospective recruits from turning down offers because the coach is "too strict". It is time that we bring back attitudes and coaches like Rockne, Neyland, Hayes, Bryant, etc. Those guys laid down the law. Those guys were the wardens and the athletes knew that... and showed respect for it. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/IQ5YiQqrZCk&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/IQ5YiQqrZCk&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KpuMd2SEzfM&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KpuMd2SEzfM&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/M3VTk0cEQB8&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/M3VTk0cEQB8&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8ps_7MFIWSQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8ps_7MFIWSQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
