zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz <t>That logo list is L A M E!!!<br/> <br/> There must be a Clemson alum working there, because that paw print is about as generic as it gets.</t>
Here's somebody's list of top mascots!! Oh boy! I have to admit I've never heard of the Husker L'il Red guy. But how lame is it that Sparty and Purdue Pete are in the top 5!! Top Mascots But having Uga at #1 should make up for Herschel Walkers gaff on the greatest athletes for Tailback!
I couldn't get that article, 'cause you hafta be an espn "insider". But are you sure it's Purdue Pete? As we've discussed before, he isn't our mascot. Our mascot is the Boilermaker Special, picutured in my avatar. Pete's a little lame, as you suggest, but the Special is pretty cool...it's even interstate legal! stu
They aknowledge that Purdue Pete isn't the offical mascot...but this guy still likes him. Just another list, this summer seems to be setting a new record for top "X" lists. Here's the text. I can't believe that the Leprachaun didn't even make the "missed cut" list!!
:? That's the lamest list I've ever seen. I've never even heard of some of those mascots. If that writer was a West Coast guy, the Stanford Tree would sexually molest him and leave his broken body for the Beavers, Ducks and Sun Devils to pick over like a bunch of hyenas... Trivia time: when did the leprechaun become the mascot at Notre Dame?
hmmm I know it wasn't before 1845 because that was the first year of the famine, and Leprachauns are known for their resourcefullness so they would have lasted longer. And I know it wasn't during prohibition as no self respecting Irishman would emigrate to a country that banned alcohol. So I'll guess that Sid brought him to ND in 1960! Terry
Excellent question, JO'Co. I don't know the answer but I'll guess just after WW II. No, Terry. I'm responsible for a lot of things, but that's not one of them.
8) Actually, Terry is right. Despite his denials, Sid did bring the Leprechaun with him and it became the official mascot of Notre Dame in 1965. Before that, an Irish terrier dog was the school mascot. Here is the story... The Leprechaun In keeping with the nickname Fighting Irish and the Irish folklore, the Leprechaun serves as the Notre Dame mascot. The Notre Dame logo features a side view of the figure with his dukes up, ready to battle anyone that comes his way. The live version is a student, chosen annually at tryouts, dressed in a cutaway green suit and Irish country hat. The Leprechaun brandishes a shillelagh and agressively leads cheers and interacts with the crowd, supposedly bringing magical powers and good luck to the Notre Dame team. The Leprechaun wasn't always the official mascot of Notre Dame - for years the team was represented by a series of Irish terrier dogs. The first, named Brick Top Shuan-Rhu, was donated by one Charles Otis of Cleveland and presented to Irish head coach Knute Rockne the weekend of the Notre Dame-Pennsylvania game Nov. 8, 1930. A number of terriers later took the role of the school mascot, which usually took the name Clashmore Mike. The Clashmore Mike mascot last made an appearance on the cover of the 1963 Notre Dame Football Dope Book with coach Hugh Devore and captain Bob Lehmann. The Leprechaun was named the official mascot in 1965.
Wow! It happened during my years in school (1962-66) and I did not even know it. I'm pretty sure the leprechaun was there my entire 4 years. He must have been the unofficial mascot for a while. Very interesting piece of history. Thanks, JO'Co.
