Last week was one of the best weekends for drama on the field with close games decided at the end and upsets.

A couple of Friday night games this week.

Clemson @ Syracuse. Clemson had an off week in week 6 so they are tanned and rested! Have they found their offense is the question? Syracuse lost their last 2 games by close margins to woeful FSU and to surprisingly good Wake Forrest. Ordinarily I'd say this would be a blowout, but this year isn't ordinary for Clemson.

CAL @ Oregon The Ducks are still the Pac 12's best team in spite of that loss to Stanford. CAL has been terrible this year. I imagine the Ducks will take it out on CAL, they've had a week to stew on that loss to Stanford. They are of course going to have to run the table to make it to the CFP and they could use some big blowout type of wins along the way.

    Saturday's games.

Kentucky @ Georgia I see this as another Arkansas game for the Dawgs. Kentucky is a good team as was Arkansas, but they aren't in the same class at Georgia. I won't be surprised if they get shutout. Stetson Bennett is seemingly the starter for this game but he's played well so far in the relief of JT Daniels.

Purdue @ Iowa. This seems like sure win for the Hawkeyes, Purdue has lost 2 out of it's last 3 games. Hawkeye defense is the strength of this team and I imagine Purdue will have a tough time scoring. Being at Kinnick Stadium is another plus for Iowa.

UCF @ Cincinnati Bearcats were ready at the bell, no hangover from the ND win and I expect to be the same for the UCF game. UCF is without Dillion Gabriel at QB. No chance for them at Cincy. Cincinnati, I think will be focused for every game this year.

TCU @ OU The only drama here is who will start at QB for the Sooners. Former Heisman front runner Spencer Rattler or Freshman hero Caleb Williams. If I were Riley I'd start Rattler and not put the pressure on Williams. TCU is a decent team and I won't be surprised if they give the Sooners a game, or if they get blown out.

Alabama @ MSST I expect that Miss State will pay dearly for the Alabama loss to A&M.

    Penn State ...open date
    Michigan ...open date

Michigan State @ IU IU not having the kind of season they had last year, Michigan State is having that kind of season. Sure they probably should have lost to Nebraska, but they didn't. Sparty keeps it going.

Oklahoma State @ Texas This is a huge game for both teams. Texas needs the win to get back up off the turf and OSU needs to win to keep their undefeated season alive. OSU unlike teams in the past isn't really an offensive juggernaut, they do have a very good defense. Texas needs to play a complete game no second half let downs.

Florida @ LSU Eddie O is in trouble with LSU fans and you know the Gators still remember the Shoe game from last year. They will come into Baton Rouge on a mission. More pain for LSU and Eddie O might be looking for a new address at the end of the season.

Texas A&M @ Missouri. Aggies are in a good spot right now, having beaten Alabama they can really have a great season if they can continue that level of play that they showed last weekend. Has the offense turned a corner, has the OL solidified? I think Missouri is what the Aggies need this weekend. This is a Missouri team that gave up 62 points to Tenn.

Nebraska @ Minnesota Huskers are overdue for a game to go their way. They have played well enough to win more games than they have, but they have found ways to lose instead of finding a way to win. Minn is maybe a team that they can finally figure out how to win.

BYU @ Baylor Two good teams, both lost last weekend. Should be a good game. Both need the win. I give BYU credit they have really put together a nice schedule of teams for this year. Will be Big 12 mates with Baylor in the future. Mormons vs Baptists. I'd call it a Holy War but BYU already plays in one of those with Utah.

Ole Miss @ Tenn This is one of the more interesting games of the weekend, Tenn has really been playing well this year, they are 4-2 and have been scoring a lot of points. Ole Miss played a wild shootout with Arkansas last weekend and at #13 while they aren't going to win the SEC West they have a shot at a really good season. I kind of expect another shootout like they had with Arkansas.

Arizona State @ Utah Big game in the Pac 12 south. Right now ASU is in the drivers seat but Utah was a pre-season favorite and after a couple of close losses seem to have righted the ship and this could be a really good game. Utah can not afford to lose this game if they want to win the Pac 12 South.

Army @ Wisconsin. This to me is a really interesting game. Army with that serice academy option attack always gives teams that don't see it a lot of problems. They haven't exactly played a Power 5 schedule though. Wisconsin plays stout defense but still seems to struggle on offense. I won't be surprised if this game is very low scoring and Army somehow pulls the upset.

Lots of other good games on tap. I wonder if this weekend will provide the drama and upsets that last weekend did...more shaking up the polls.

Terry, how does being tanned relate to success on the field. :D Seriously, thanks for these previews. I'm sure we all enjoy them.

Lincoln Riley not saying who will start the game this Saturday vs TCU.

Oh and where will Steve Sarkesian be Thursday night? Not at home grinding over the game plan for Oklahoma State!!

According to Chad Simmons of On3 Recruits, a notable head coach will be in attendance at Arch Manning’s Isidore Newman game on Thursday. Texas’s Steve Sarkisian will be present for the school’s contest against LaPlace (La.) St. Charles Catholic that evening.

Manning will then take his official visit to Austin two days later on Oct. 16.

I'm hoping Alabama is able to put the loss behind them. Single elimination National Championship tournament from here on out.

week=accompanying Anne to some fall craft show. I can almost hear the sounds of a South Pacific wood flute and smell the aroma from cranberry diffuser sticks already.

    Enjoy your write-ups Terry.

I hope Florida is as fired up for LSU as you say, we don't need to lose that game.

I agree with you about Kentucky and Georgia. Right now Georgia looks like the class of the SEC and probably country. But several Big 10 teams may have a different idea about that.

    Ivan Maisel on Sark ..

Steve Sarkisian and learning from a loss

I say this knowing full well it’s too early to make any sort of declaration about Steve Sarkisian 2.0. But watching Texas fall apart in the fourth quarter Saturday rang a bell about Sarkisian’s stops at Washington and USC. So I went digging. His record in one-score games is 15-13, slightly below his record of 35-24 in other games. Was it that in his season-and-a-half at USC the Trojans lost four games as two-score favorites? That speaks to mental discipline. But, no, it takes more than a half-season to impress upon players that the cost of discipline is high but surely worth paying. If Texas doesn’t learn from that experience Saturday, Sarkisian isn’t doing his job.

Well I guess it's time to see if the Aggies truly have the OL issues somewhat solved, or was it just a bunch of guys playing out of their minds...
I tend to think it was a little of both. While they certainly won't be as excited for an 11am kick in Columbia Missouri, they will face the worst run defense in the SEC. In the end I guess I won't really know where we stand, unless we revert back to the clueless offense we had in Calzada's first game at Colorado.

I'm interested to see how the Kentucky/Uga game goes. I actually think Kentucky is a bit better than Arkansas, but not enough to beat the Dawgs. Might be one of those slugfest games, but in the end I think the Georgia boys will slug a bit harder.

Florida/L$U intrigues me as well... Will Fat Eddie's boys fight for him, or let him ride off into the sunset taking their state further into debt?? I'm torn here. I'd like the Gators to pound the ever-living snot out of those coon-@ssed losers, but then they'll for sure fire him and I don't want them to get lucky on their next hire... :p

Miss/Tenn... I doubt my dislike for Kiffin rivals Tom and Cindy, but it's up there. I hope they take him down a few pegs... actually a BUNCH of pegs!! This one has "record score between FBS teams" written all over it.

The Athletic has an article up on Lane Kiffin and how leaving Tenn for USC went down.

The details of what happened in Knoxville on that chaotic evening of Jan. 12, 2010, where Kiffin, after announcing “I really believe that this is probably the only place I would have left here to go was Southern California,” had to barricade himself in his office until police escorted him home at 4 a.m. to avoid an enraged fanbase, have been outlined numerous times.

I did not realize that Oklahoma State has won the 5of the last 6 games in DKR/Memorial Stadium Austin.

A home game doesn't offer a lot of room for comfort, either. The Cowboys had won five straight in Austin until the two teams' most recent meeting, a 36-30 Longhorns win in 2019. Texas held Oklahoma State off last year in Stillwater, 41-34. It's been that type of close-fought matchup over the past four years, with the series tied 2-2 and just seven total points separating the two teams (122-115 in Texas' favor).

I hadn't been paying attention to San Diego State, which is 5-0 and of course having a shot at least at running the table to an unbeaten season. I didn't know their coach was Brady Hoke. Seems like he's just meant to be a San Diego State coach.

They don't have a home stadium this year, they tore down the old one that the Chargers used and are building a new one that will max out at 35K attendance and open for the 2022 season. They play their home games up in Carson if you can believe that, at Cal State.

They have released the Lombardi Award Semifinalists.. One glaring omission. Georgia DT Jordan Davis.

The award is given annually to the nation’s top lineman at the end of the season, whether it be on the offensive or defensive side of the ball.

Davis, who has been arguably the best overall player in college football, was somehow left off.

How you don’t include Davis is absolutely mind-boggling.

Clemson wins 17-14 but Scuse had a chance to tie, and missed field goal in the closing moments of the game.

What the hell is going down in Baton Rouge?

Pregame talk was all about who would take the LSU job when Eddie O was fired? LSU underdogs at home, Gators motivated with all that has gone down between them and LSU. Easy win for the Gators? LSU 21 - 6 mid 2nd qtr.
