Corey never got around to his weekly thoughts...so I thought I'd put a few out there. 1. Alabama is rounding into shape at the right time of the year, they handled LSU very well and that game with Auburn is their next big hurdle. I fully expect them to be in the BCS game, and inspite of the Ohio State kid saying they would wipe the field with them...they are the ongoing favorites. 2. FSU has no impediments to finishing undefeated, even the usually tough match with the Gators shouldn't provide much competition. The kid Jameis Winston is really an awesome QB, I watched him vs Miami and he sort of looks too big to be nifty with his feet, but the kid can motor and hurt you. He's not Johnny Football when he takes off, more Tim Tebow. 3. Duck loss to Stanford really was huge in so many ways, not just because they lost we all know that if you lose 1 you can still make it to the BCS game....just have to wait for some others to falter. But Mariota apparently is not 100% and if he's not 100% that really hurts them. Stanford is of course now the odds on favorite to win the Pac12 and should an opening occur due to some upsets to Alabama, Baylor, Ohio State or FSU they would sneak into the NC game. Mariota IMHO lost ground in the Heisman watch as well. 4. Baylor had an excellent win vs OU. Granted OU is a good not great team this year so you have to put it in that perspective. But the Bears have some good games down the stretch and finish with a Texas team that I believe can beat them. Art Briles is the new "Hot Coach". You think Baylor is where they are because they throw the ball a lot, sure they do and they are very good at it, but they are also in the top 10 in rushing so they are pretty balanced. Solid football team. I think if they win out should at least jump Ohio State, probably not FSU though. Art Briles should be offered the Texas Job, he's paid his dues. He's a Texan, He played HS Football in Texas, He played College football in Texas, He has coached his whole career in HS (2 state titles) and college in Texas. He can pick up the phone and call any HS coach in the state and most likely know him by name and get the lowdown on players. The big question is would he have a good defense, I don't know of course, Baylor has a good defense this year whether or not that is a trend or an abberration I don't know. Not sure I'd be as excited about Phil Bennett coming to Texas as Art. 5. Gators, obviously in big trouble...could redeem themselves by ruining the FSU season for sure. Gator AD already expressed his support for Muschamp so he'll be back next year no matter what happens. 6. Irish also in trouble, very discouraging loss to Pitt with two games looming vs a good(not great) BYU team that is sort of a must win game and then the finale vs Stanford which nobody expects at this time that we can win...but if we lose we need to play well and have our opportunities. Irish faithfull are up in arms over multiple things about Brian Kelly. But he'll be back next year that is for sure. Trouble is that Golson won't fix all the problems this team has shown. 7. Texas...well I told you I thought we could win out and I think we can...OK State and Texas Tech are not juggernauts and we can beat them. Setting up the biggest game of the Year for both Baylor and Texas. Hope they both arrive undefeated in conference play. I guess the question is what about Mack Brown, if he wins out and goes to a BCS bowl does he take the opportunity to go out on top? I will certainly be hard to fire him if he doesn't want to retire. If they do fire him after he wins out...whoa the media will have a field day. 8. The Heisman...I've said in another topic Johnny Football is the best and most valuable player in the country, but the antics in the off season have derailed him. If you think he couldn't duplicate last year...look again, he's doing better and he has better stats than the other Heisman Hopefuls if stats are what floats your boat. I would have liked Mariota to win myself, he's a hell of a player but I think the loss to Stanford hurts. Right now I'd have to say AJ McCarron is my guy even if you consider it sort of a lifetime achievement award. The kid just wins. 9. That's all I have for the moment,...I'm sure I'll think of something else.
1. Alabama's defense did get off to a slow start, but LSU attempted to execute themselves by shooting themselves in the foot. That was completely unnecessary because Alabama was more than happy to do the honors in the second half. 2. FSU looks really good, but even though they've played (and demolished) highly-ranked Clemson and Miami, is that enough to show how good they are? By comparison to the undefeated in the B10 and B12, I don't know if they've done any less, though. 3. Mariota can still play himself back into the discussion, but he did lose some ground to the other favorites. I don't think Mariota is as important to the Ducks as Manziel is to A&M, but anytime your top signal caller goes down, you're going to be affected. Well Missouri is the exception that proves the rule. 4. Baylor is another team that I need to see them play the meat of their schedule. The OU game was their only test so far. They have OSU and tu coming up. (Until the last two weeks, TT looked like it would be a test. Now, not so much.) IF Baylor wins out, they probably end ahead of Stanford and OSU. I don't see a way they get ahead of FSU since Alabama and FSU are sharing #1 and #2 in the polls and computers. 6. ND decided to ruin Stanford's chances the only way left to them: lose and screw up their SOS. Way to go domers. 7. I still think even if you lose one more and don't win the B12 Mack is staying. Or, as you pointed at, if tu fires a coach that goes undefeated in conference and to a BCS bowl, how would that play out to the 35 coaches you're trying to lure away from their existing job? Good luck with that.
If Mack wins out and doesn't want to go it'll be very interesting around the Texas Internet and not a happy interesting either. As far as FSU and the schedule, I don't think that is going to hurt them. They are FSU after all and they have a QB who the medial loves (rightfully the kid is good). Nope destroy the Gators and win the ACC Championship game and they are in.
I don't remember but maybe 2 or 3 times in history when I felt the Gators had no chance vs. FSU and all of those times I was right. Same deal here so unless the Noles falter in the ACC title game they're in.
Terry - my comment in no way meant to disagree with "win and they're in". You're right, if they go undefeated, I don't see either OSU or Baylor overtaking them. My comment had to do with I still am not convinced who they are, just like I wasn't convinced before the LSU game who Bama was. I'm now convinced on Bama, but I don't think I'll have the chance to be convinced until/if they meet Bama in the CG. Further, to be fair, I'm not so sure that either Baylor or OSU have played anyone to convince who they are, either.
Right now IMHO, Stanford belongs in front of Baylor and Ohio State...they have played a very tough schedule and have more big games coming. The loss to Utah, not IMHO a bad loss Utah as the talking headsa are trying to make it. They are a solid team and are well coached. Don't bring your A game and you'll be in a dogfight.
LOL Been busy at work and being sick. I was going to post this today. Oh well, the best thing about the whole week was this guy. nothing else matters, really. The death machines rolled on. The title picture is much clearer. This season may have at least 3 more major upsets in it. Everyone else showed who they really are this week, and who they are is, not much.
I can't stop laughing at that guy... Thank God we're playing them during the day, that guy will still be hung over from Friday night. Get ready... Baylor is going to lose to OK St. No, OSU isn't great but neither is the pretender from Waco.
Alabama and FSU in the BCS Championship game. Bama wins. Gators finish 5-7 for first losing season since 1979. Interesting side note I read, but didn't check out myself, that since 1992 when the SEC put in place the Championship game every team except the Gators have had a losing season. Unless we upset either S. Carolina or FSU we will join the list. The Ohio State kid should keep his mouth shut. I understand Urban Meyer has banned him from talking to the press now. Also the Gators may be down to QB #3. Tyler Murphy has been playing with a hurt shoulder and it has apparently gotten worse. Not good with S. Carolina at #10 and FSU at #2 coming up. Baylor is the team I would really like to win out and be in the Championship game. I know Scott doesn't like them and I have no real reason to say that except it would be great to shake up the rankings.
Bill it's not that I dislike them. It's just that they are not that good. They are light in the britches and make WAY too many mistakes. They remind me of Tech when Leach was running up big scores, then got slapped when they hit a top 10 opponent. No... OU was NOT a top 10 team. I'd rather a one-loss Stanford make it than watch Art and his boys be destroyed by a MUCH better opponent...
Well so much for the Art Briles to Texas rumor. I'm reading that Baylor and Briles have reached and agreement on a big extension for him. 10 years at 4 million per year, and a extremely big poison pill.
Hey Scott there is a poster over on Inside Texas who claims that Johnny Football's dad would like him to return for his Jr. Year. That JFF will definitely ask for his NFL Draft grade that the NcAA allows all underclassmen to get before they make their decison. If JFF doesn't get a 1st round grade then he'd coming back. Are you hearing this? He sure looked like he was taking in Kyle for the last time at the end of the game last week.
My guys... a few who are friends with the family say: No decision has been made. They are truly going to weigh all options, and the NFL grade will matter a lot. If he's not very high... he will probably come back. As everyone knows... money is not an issue for Johnny. And his legacy as a player does matter to him a LOT. He could cement himself as the greatest to ever play at Kyle... BONUS - Mike Evans was heard to say... if JFF returns, so will he. Saban to Texas might become a reality if he finds out those two are coming back!
I've already shared this with a couple of you, but for everyone else, Saban has been caught on video leaving the Bama/A&M game the last years. Appropriately, it also foretells his reaction once he hears Manziel is coming back: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/E3Hfgvjdb0Y" frameborder="0"></iframe>
College Football's worst all time coaches at Great Programs... Man they had to stretch to come up with that topic...Interesting list, and painful to Irish Fans. All Time Worst Coaches at Great Programs
That article is still loading for me so I haven't read it, but I'd bet that we have at least 5 dudes on that list.. maybe even 5 in the top 10.
Schenellenberger is on that list but no Bob Davie? ********. I was close, we got 4 out of the 5 I predicted.
Jameis Winston is some how entangled in an old (Dec 2012) felony sexual assualt case...odd thing is that the assailant is described as 5'9" to 6' tall...Winston is 6'4". I hope he gets clear of this if he is innocent, and fast.
