Lots going on as usual. 1. Alabama/LSU great defensive struggle. Chris Fowler said he's been doing Game Day for 25 years and this was the most electric atmosphere he can ever remember. Probably fitting that it went to OT between these two great teams. Somebody had to lose, and that the Hat was the winner should put to rest that he's some sort of nutty and lucky coach. He may be nutty, but at some point when you keep winning it's not luck but good coaching. 2. Michigan goes down, the whole thing really is on Denard Robinsons back whether or not they win or lose any particular game. Force him to stay in the pocket and he's an ordinary QB. Yet if UM turns him loose as a Pat White type of QB then he's too slight to take the pounding over a whole season. 3. Stanford...another week another win, this team is very very good and mentally tough. Well deserving of a high ranking. After last weeks exciting OT win you kind of expect some what of a let down, so that they came out a little flat against a bad OSU team is not surprising. They got their feet on the ground though and kicked some butt. 4. Ok State/KState: Wow a polar opposite of the LSU/Alabama game. I actually hope that OK State remains undefeated and plays for the NC. They have a great offense...would be interesting to see a great offense vs a great defense. You'd have to figure the great defense wins but might be fun to watch. ...or not? 5. B10 sort of up for grabs isn't it. MSU and PSU in the drivers seat but can they stay there? I don't think PSU can IMHO. MSU maybe. Maybe a rematch of the Wisconsin/MSU Hail Mary game. 6. Texas can you believe it we ran for over 400 yards again this week. Always good to stomp Texas Tech. Our best running back Malcolm Brown didn't even play. I don't think we'll be able to keep this up but it's a big change from the past. Eventually David Ash our true freshman QB will be called on to take the game on his shoulders and win it. 7. Texas A&M/OU You have to feel bad for Ryan Broyles who's college career ended with a really bad knee injury. He could have come out last year but came back to have a shot at the NC. As far as the Aggies, they have to be disappointed in where they are right now. They still have Texas and KState left to play both of which could beat them. A 6-6 season was not what they had in mind. 8. ND/Wake Brian Kelly called it a good gritty win, and went off on a reporter who asked him in his post game presser about problems with his passing game. Not beat red like USF sidelines, but it clearly hit a nerve with him. Still it is a win and that is what we need. Clearly though Brian Kelly needs better play from his QB. The studio crew kept talking like if we win out we could get to a BCS game, sorry that ship has sailed. We are still not in the top 25 and our next 2 opponents (MD and BC) even with big wins won't propel us upward that much and a win vs an undefeated Standford will be an upset and that's all. Best hope is for Champs Sports Bowl game. 9. UCLA Bruins fans worst nightmare is coming to pass, the Bruins beat a ranked opponent in Arz. State. Skippy holding on for dear life. 10. Polls and Bowls. Well with Alabama sitting ahead of undefeated Boise State you can bet that short of Alabama losing another game that Boise will not slip by them. They have only a game with unranked TCU that is of any consequence. It's been a long time since their win over UGA. They will not get by Alabama. If OK State and Stanford both lose then Alabama will be moved back into their #2 slot. If Oregon and OU both win out beating unbeatens Stanford and OK State and Alabama wins out I doubt seriously if either of those teams jumps Alabama. You could make the case that Oregon has a tougher closing schedule with USC and Stanford, but they also were beaten by LSU and the game wasn't nearly as close as the LSU/Alabama game. So unless there is a rule that prevents a team who does not win it's conference from playing for the NC then we will get a rematch. OU and Oregon might be equally as deserving as 1 loss teams but I doubt if they will out vote Bama. I guess if I were to pick one that has a shot it would be Oregaon because it will have not only beaten Stanford but also won a Conf Champ Game while OU will be sitting home on Championship weekend.
Texas A&M's Christine Michael tore his ACL in Sat's game with OU...done for the season. Last year he broke his leg. Great player. Hope he can recover and come back strong.
Alabama fell to #3 in the BCS poll last night, with LSU and Ok State 1 and 2. If Stanford wins out I would expect them to jump Bama though. ...if both OK State and Stanford win out I don't know who ends up #2...assuming LSU wins out as well.
It seems as if great defensive play in college championship games almost always trumps a great offense. Nebraska over Spurrier in '95, UF over both OSU and Oklahoma, Auburn ( better defense than Oregon), Miami in 2001, Oklahoma over FSU...... etc. etc.. Okie State has the firepower but I would take Bama and how would the Cowboys passing game fare against LSU's DBs?
I think in most instances you could say that defense wins championships. But still the anticipation of the great offense either Stanford with Luck at QB or the multifaceted OK State offense vs the LSU defense would be great. Not sure I want to see another 9-6 game for the Nat'l Championship. I remember during that 14 year run where the NFC Champion always won the Super Bowl there was talk that the NFC Championship game was the real Super Bowl and that the playoffs should be reformatted to allow the two best teams, ie the #1 and #2 NFC teams a chance to meet in the Super Bowl. But thankfully that was never implemented. Super Bowls, NBA Championships, World Series, etc are not always the two best teams.
You know those photos from car & driver must have been photo shopped because the driver sure did look better while moving...
