Pac12: Chip Kelly is a terrible big game play caller. This is back to back games he has used a pocket pass approach against 2 SEC defenses. It was a bad idea against Auburn, and a worse one against LSU. It shows that he didn't really understand why he lost that game... Stanford looks stout. USC looks like they are coached by Kiffikins, UCLA is going to fire their head coach...Oregon State and Washington.... we're going to send your ass to the WAC if you keep this **** up. This conference looks like a 1 team show at the moment. SEC: The gap between West and East could not be greater. In the glory days of the East, they were still never anything more than UF, UT and Uga. The West has 4 bonafide monsters and 2 teams that would probably go to bowls but they won't here. I think the East will come down to the winner of UF/UT. How can you deny the power of Dooley's pants? Jesus Christ, I'm just surprised you guys didn't play on shag carpet. Big12: That awkward moment when you're waiting for your spouse to move out pre-divorce... Also, Oklahoma vs Texas vs A&M. No one else matters. Big10: Nebraska vs Wisconsin... the Honky Bowl.. Ohio State and Michigan are not picking good times to rebuild or go through transition. MountainWest Conference: I am fairly certain that neither Nessler or Blackledge had any effing idea that Boise was no longer in the WAC. One thing that showed A LOT this weekend was the ignorance of many in the media about the game of college football. Jesus, it's all some of these guys do. How do you screw it up? This really needs to be a BCS conference. ACC: No one cares.. Florida State looks good though, but they're probably cheating. Miami will make it interesting.. but not that interesting. This conference sucks. Dark horse, Georgia Tech. Big East: USF may win this... TCU may win this.. who knows? Does anyone care? TCU came into this thing as a legit BCS bowl team and open up their breakout season as a BCS member by getting their ass kicked on national tv by Baylor...
Oh don't think I was leaving Notre Dame out of this. I was just discussing those teams who played football in Week 1. We haven't played anything resembling that yet. I'll have something when we show up.
Well I didn't get to see much yesterday. I did watch the part of the 3rd qtr and the 4th qtr of the Boise game. First thought was...what the hey is with those UGA uniforms? Has the XFL been reborn and UGA have a franchise? Boise looked good, UGA is a good team not a great team though, but still they went to Georgia and won convincingly. Unless they trip up like they did last year they should run the table, although the Mtn West teams will be a little tougher IMHO than the teams in the WAC. TCU/Baylor. Frogs will probably still be a very good team, but they lost some really good players including a 4 year starter in Andy Dalton. So they might not be as good as they were the last couple of years. Still good though and any team with Robt Griffin III at QB is dangerous. While it's using a pretty broad stroke to say Oregon's style of offense doesn't work vs a big fast SEC defense, maybe it doesn't. Also give the Hat credit, he's won a lot of games. He's goofy, he's unconventional, but he wins a lot of games. I didn't give them much of a chance losing their starter at QB and the controversy surrounding the team. Pac12 looks like they could use an infusion of talent from the B12! Ohio State, solid win. They needed that, just win and get back to playing football. The team has plenty of talent, and who knows maybe Luke Fickell will be a great coach. One more upset left for this weekend....SMU over Texas A&M tonight! You heard it here first!
Terry, I think you misunderstand what I am saying.. I am not for a second saying Oregon's offense doesn't work against SEC defenses.. It does. What I am saying is that Chip Kelly panics and leaves his offense at the door when things don't go their way. Pocket passing is NOT a major part of their offense.. Yet in back to back games against the SEC's best he has gone to it almost exclusively. When he put the QB out on the edge, it did cause problems. The problem for Oregon is, they almost never ran it. Twice now I've watched Oregon against SEC teams and wondered, "WTF are you guys doing?" You can point to a play or two and say it didn't work, but that's not how option teams think nor is that how Oregon normally plays. You stay committed to the option and the perimeter attack. Typical Oregon ground attacks don't start cranking out 5 to 8 yards a carry until late in the game AFTER they have worn you out making you go sideline to sideline. What Oregon has done is abandon that each time.. When Kelly isn't pooping his pants, they stay committed to the option and they hit those HR runs. They are using their QB as a dropback passer. Hell, that's the whole reason Costa wasn't the starter last year (he was a better passer). Why in the world they keep that kid in the pocket and rely on him to make touch throws is beyond me.
Today's LA Times reports that Oklahoma has approached the 12Pac and asked to join. The Pac will accept four more schools to create the Pac16. The new teams will be: Oklahoma Texas Tech Texas Okie State The two divisions will be split into east vs. west, with the west being known as "Real Universities + USC" and the east being known as "Real Evil Empires." - Watch out for lower level Sacramento State. They upset Oregon State yesterday and they're located in one of the greatest recruiting areas of California. They appear to be making progress... re: clueless broadcasters I watched some clown yesterday saying that, UCLA had better beat Houston, because their coach can't afford to lose to Houston "two years in a row." Uh...UCLA beat Houston last year. In fact, the Bruins hadn't lost to ANY Texas team in almost 20 years! UCLA had beaten Houston, Texas A&M, Rice, Baylor and the Texas Longhorns THREE times over that period, including the infamous "Rout 66."
Everything above UCLA... LOL I laughed hard at that. Good stuff. As for UCLA, don't get me started.. we don't lose to those flippin Texas schools and the Houston pill is a real hard one to swallow. Rick better pull the rabbit out of his hat against Texas. This is bullsh*t.
C'mon Terry... eating a helping of ESiPN/Texas spite before making a prediction about an A&M game is bound to make you look silly. Our defense had some issues to work through to "replace" some very important losses, and at times it got ugly, but once they figured it out... we handled the Ponies as expected. The offense was total vanilla, and still chewed up the little horses with ease. It took a couple of holding calls to slow them down. RE: Oregon. Corey's point is probably correct, but I wonder if maybe Chip was thinking that skinny QB might not survive the game if he put him on the edge too many times? Only saw highlights of Stanford... but look like they haven't missed a beat. USC... it was Minnesota... nuf said. BSU is very good. Moore is a great QB in that offense, and knows it like the back of his hand. Should win MWC. Georgia has athletes, but not a cohesive team. Nothing new there. TCU is not very good. Their defense is where they are hurting. Baylor is still Baylor. No defense, and if you pop RGB a few times, he will quickly begin to hear footsteps and make mistakes... Saw some of Ohio St. Nothing flashy, just disposed of lesser opponent as they should. Can't tell much now. Saw a little of Wisconsin... look like the same old road-graders. Should be tuff. ND... I only saw this one in spurts (like everyone else!) and not the whole thing, but I wouldn't jump off the ledge just yet. Those turnovers would cost most teams the game. I would be concerned about the coaches blood pressure, and how his antics will affect the team if that continues...
Scott, Ya know, actually, you make a really good point that I had overlooked. They treat all of the other athletes on the offense as if they are interchangeable, why not the QB? They have in other games against other opponents. They throw WRs, RB etc under the bus. He's normally just as wide open with the QB but not in the past two games. Very good point.. either way, he's gotta let his nuts drop and get after it... otherwise, he will get passed.
Terry, Sorry to hear about you falling ill before the Texas game and hope you are feeling better. In case you missed Rice's band tribute to the SEC coming to the state of Texas-----
Thanks Bob, I'm fully recovered now! MOB is always good for some fun! Although back in the day when Texas was in the SWC the MOB had some not so friendly encounters with Texas Basketball at their place!
OK while I have a team to cheer for the Miami Hurricanes at Maryland tonight... 9 starters off the team in the first game with two new head coaches at the schools. I appreciated Ucons head coach giving praise to Miami coach Golden letting him know who the starting players would be earlier in the week once the NCAA laid down the punishment and suspensions of the players. It seems Golden was in contact with him prior to the NCAA and promised him he would give the starting players to U Cons coach. No matter what happens Al Golden has impressed despite what he has inherited. I don't know why he would want to stay but hopefully he does. The rainy weather should play a factor but as other Cane fans agree with Jacory Harris not playing the first game we are guaranteed not to throw at least two interceptions less this game...
For the record, I think the Irish can and will finish ranked. They can still have a BCS bowl worthy season. Everything they need fixed can be fixed. I'm having major doubts about leadership, that's all. It's not that doom and gloom. We're talented. As for that article, some really bad examples.. That Virginia Tech team lost to Boise and James Madison, then they 'turned it around' in a bad ACC. I notice they leave it off by saying they went to the Orange Bowl.. In the Orange Bowl, Stanford whipped their ass 40-12. That Michigan team beat a mediocre Florida team that also finished 9-4. That Stanford Rose Bowl team was quite possibly the worst Pac10 champion in a while. They were also beaten by San Jose State. They were beaten by Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.. That Oregon team gave up 51 to Stanford in a loss and was beaten by Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. That Colorado team was handed a win in the game against ND on the infamous phantom penalty on Rocket's return. Miami was probably their best example of the week 1 not mattering, and that still came down to Nebraska going for 2.
