The Dayton Daily News must have blown up this morning, their webpage is down (URL Not Found error) so I can't read that article.

Maybe it'll be back up later.

    Nebraska calls on Beavercreek's Domicone

    Friday, January 11, 2008

BEAVERCREEK — The unofficial world record for speed dialing and text messaging is held by Zach Domicone.

"I think I called or texted everyone on the call list on my cell within a minute after coach told me Nebraska was offering me a (college football) scholarship," Domicone said. "I'm not sure who was more excited, me or coach."

Domicone is a 6-foot-3-inch, 215-pound senior at Beavercreek High School. He was an option quarterback, but college coaches project him as a defensive back because of his size and speed (4.46 seconds in the 40-yard dash). His coach is Scott Clodfelter, who guided Beavercreek to its first winning season in 15 years last fall at 6-4.

Beavercreek is usually not on the recruiting radar for Division I college football coaches. If a player from Beavercreek has gone to a Division III school in the past decade it's news. So you can imagine the buzz created when, out of nowhere, Nebraska offered Domicone a full ride. Although it had a down season at 5-7 that got coach Bill Callahan excused, Nebraska is still a perennial top program with five national titles.

Callahan has been replaced by LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini. He is scheduled to make an official home visit to the Domicone family early next week. In turn, Domicone is scheduled to visit Nebraska Jan. 17-19.

"I've told them they're my first choice," said Domicone, "If I like what I see during my visit I'll make it official."

Domicone wasn't getting much attention after the football season. "A lot of schools want to see a season highlight tape," he said. "So coach showed me how to put one together off our tape machine. I went in every day after school for a couple of weeks and picked out what I thought were my best plays on offense and defense."

Domicone's father Fred, who played football at the University of Dayton, and Clodfelter helped him edit a DVD.

How Domicone came to Pelini's attention is a bit clouded. One version is that an LSU graduate assistant coach saw the Domicone DVD and told Pelini "you have to see this guy." Another version is that Carl Pelini alerted his brother to a under-recruited prospect at Beavercreek. Carl Pelini is a former defensive coach at Ohio U. and recently re-joined the Cornhuskers' coaching staff with his brother.

"Who knows, with all the recruiting stories," said Clodfelter.

"All I know is Bo Pelini called and left me a voice mail at school the week before Christmas saying he had seen a tape on Zach, thought he could play for him at Nebraska and an assistant (John Papuchis) next day wanted to talk to Zach. That may not be a big deal at some schools, but it's huge here."

Domicone got a call from Bo Pelini prior to the LSU-Ohio State national championship game.

"He told me to watch how LSU defensive backs Craig Steltz and Ali Highsmith played their positions," said Domicone.

"He envisioned me playing those spots for Nebraska. So that made the game even more interesting for me because I was rooting for Ohio State."

It's always good to find those nuggets, if they work out. I'd still rather have a class loaded with 4* and 5* prospects, but a lot of good teams are built without those types of kids. It's the hard route to go, but you can have a good program with them.

I doubt however that is the type of kid that Pellini wants to make the cornerstone of his program in the future. But right now since most of your highly rated recruits started bailing when it was clear Callahan wasn't comming back, Pellini has to dig deep and find some kids and fillout a class as best he can.

You can bet that in the future he'll be going hard for top players all throughout the Country.

    Nice article

    Scary picture

I'll take the 4 and 5 star players myself and let the chips fall where they may.

I'll take the kids that can play....the number of stars that somebody else has attached to them is irrelevant, imho.

I can tell you this kid made it through four years of HS football without ever experiencing a victory over my HS, Dayton Carroll.

But I'm sure he'll find the going easier in the Big 12. 8)

    Huskerman,
I am with you, sort of. I want Alabama kids (some Mississippi/Florida/Louisiana/Tennessee/Georgia players are okay) that grew up wanting to play for the University of Alabama. Now if they are a 5 star great but I have seen too many 3 star players with guts beat out the 5 stars to the top of the depth charts.

FYI to everybody....102 of the 187 roster players on THE 1995 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM came from NEBRASKA.

Good speed and a strong arm are GOD given, the rest is up to coaching and motivation.

You'll get more outa a kid that had to earn his chance than the ones that have already had it served to them.

IMHO, this Bo guy has the piss and vinegar attitude that a fire spittin' Irishman had that we stoled from Wyoming.

And speakin' of 5 stars, that born and bread Steinkuhler kid looked real good in the HSAM Army game.

It's usually the same game plan gentleman.....WHO WANTS IT'S MORE.

Because you see, THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE NEBRASKA.

THE TRAIN, THE TRAIN THEY CALL NEBRASKA.....WILL BE RUNNING UP YOUR ASS SOON.

I'll still maintain that if over time your team is loaded with 4 and 5 star players your team is going to do very well.

No way, Terry. Our secret plan next year is to rent protection, attack dogs from Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Alabama. Those Ohio pooches, upon seeing, fast, tough, SEC canines, will turn into lap dogs. 8)

Bobda have you thought about sending Lloyd the Dog to SEC Dog camp this summer? Toughen him up? Living in Milwaukee he's liable to get soft on beer and brats! :)
