Then I saw this: "Donovan mentioned the discrepancy in foul shots on five different occasions. Kentucky shot 20 free throws, making 15. Florida shot two. “We got to the free-throw line two times in by far the most physical game we have played this year,” Donovan said. “How we only got there two times is beyond me.” Officials Ron Groover, Anthony Jordan and Gary Maxwell whistled Florida for 15 fouls and Kentucky for eight in the game. Donovan didn't question the fouls that were called on the Gators, but the ones that weren't called on the Wildcats. “What we couldn't overcome was 20 free throws to two. Okay,” Donovan said.' Don't comment if you did not watch the game. One of the major miscalls I saw was when the Ky rebounder came over the back of a Florida rebounder already in position.....not moving to undercut the Ky player.....the UF player was knocked down hard and yet the Gator was called for the foul. I could watch that 10 ten times and it's a head scratcher. WTF was that ref looking at? More from Donovan: "Really frustrating,” he said. “There was a lot of contact, a really physical game out there. I think the whistle should have been blown a little bit more, but I guess it just wasn't tonight.” Donovan said he would address the discrepancy with the SEC office. “And I'll have a lot to say, too,” Donovan said."
Kentucky......SEC's ratings darling....and a shoo in for number one overall seed.....if they win the SEC tourney....
Donovan has been coaching in the SEC a very long time and has rarely if ever complained about the officiating. There were several calls on UF where the same activity netted no calls for Ky. The one call against UF where the UF player fouled the Kentucky player with his back apparently after the Ky player leaped upon him while trying to get a rebound was as preposterous a call as I have seen in BB in awhile. This was a very close game that couldn't tolerate those kinds of swings. Again....20 foul shots to two when both were palying equally doesn't add up. No conspiracy but terrible competency from the refs.
Weird how things work sometimes in college sports. Yesterday Vandy went to the line THIRTY-TWO times..... The refs on Saturday sent UF to the line only TWICE. 32-2.....No way in hell UK played a more physical....rougher game than they did vs. UF on Saturday. Maybe Donovan's message was heard and made a difference.....one day too late for UF. I hate the inconsistencies in officiating that we sometimes see.
Not just the SEC....not just the B1G; <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Z8fIqscvXTw" frameborder="0"></iframe>
I'd hate to be an offical, esp in basketball. One thing that sometimes results in a disparity of fouls is teams who are shooting mostly outside shots. You get more fouls when you go to the hoop inside.
Florida played with the same level of intensity and energy as did Kentucky in that game a week ago Saturday. With a fair shake in officiating I think UF beats UK that day......and so far in the tournament UF has looked very very good.......like a team that was indeed capable of beating Kentucky. Which is sayin something.....
