Interesting comments on a Gator message board about the BCS title win over OSU. I think the consensus is that even though it was an awesome win for Fla over the Bucks that the 1st NC over FSU in a 52-20 romp was more appreciated and higher ranked. I dunno....for me this at least ties that one probably because of my participation on this board and the fact I live in Detroit. Instead of auto-flaming me how about you guys think a little and post what in your opinion what was your school's best win ever. Actually it's a positive experience to do this......really.
We've had so many great wins at ND in my lifetime, I couldn't even begin to say which one was the best, I would even have a hard time pruning them down to 10 probably. As a Texas fan it's more clear, the '69 win over Arkansas in the Hills with President Nixon in attendance and the 2005 Nat'l Championship would be way ahead of anyother wins.
Must be a ND over the Bear win that stands out eh Terry? Texas-Ark sure did used to have a barnburner rivalry. The biggest win in that series would have to be huge. I agree that last year's Vince Young led win over favored SC had to be UT's best ever.
As I said there were so many... We beat the Bear 5 times, the biggest was of course the 1973 Sugar Bowl where we won the Nat'l Champ with that win, they were #1. Stopping the 33 game winning streak of Texas in the Cotton Bowl after the 1970 season...that was big. Stopping the 47 game wining streak of Oklahoma at Norman in 1957, that was big. Beating Texas in 1977 at the Cotton Bowl, they were #1 and we won the NC with that Victory. The Original Game of the Century...1966 tie with Michigan State. Beating Purdue in 1966 at Purdue...it was the comming out party for one of the greatest teams in history. Terry Hanratty and Jim Seymour were sophs, and they were spectacular that day. The became known as the Baby Bombers, had their own cover of Time magazine. Many, Many more. The '88 season alone was incredible due to big game wins vs Miami and the hated Jimmy Johnson, big win vs USC in LA, big win early in the season vs Michigan. It's a rich history.
You're all Drunk. The single greatest game ever played was Turkey Day 1971. PERIOD. The 2nd was watching Steve Spurrier Kickin' dirt and shaking his head in '96.
I think "best" wins are not to be confused with great wins. Florida has had several great wins that while important to the program and terrific wins do not qualify as the "best". I know I'm mincing words here but hopefully you get the point. For instance, UF's 59-34 win over top ranked Houston to open the 1969 season was a great win for sure. The win in their first ever meeting with John Robinson coached USC in 1982 was fantastic and there have been numerous....as you say...too many to remember great wins in the SEC for Florida especially of course in the last 25 years or so including stopping defending national champion Tenn's winning streak in 1999 and beating Peyton Manning's favored Tenn team in 1997. Historically though a great SEC win for Florida was in 1963 when Florida went to Tuscaloosa to face a Bear Bryant team that had only lost once in 36 games previous ( a 7-6 loss to Ga tech) and the Gators beat the Tide 10-6. That was a momumental win and one of their best SEC wins to be sure.
Now who's showing their overly sensitive side? :? I don't recall anyone flaming you for posting positive things about Fla...maybe I missed one somewhere. Best game for us was obviously the win over Miami...unless you want to go back to beating Purdue in 1968 when they (we?) were #1 and then we went on to win the NC...wasn't a great one for me at the time 'cause I was signed up to go to Purdue and didn't have any OSU ties yet. As for the Boilers...any win over ND will do...they are always so (sigh) unexpected anymore.
I don't know, but have any college football players other than Seymour and Hanratty made the cover of Time Mag?
I recognize Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside....Doc Blanchard and Glen Davis of Army. Who are those other guys? I can't read the text on the cover.
Here's a ND/Purdue game from Stu's boyhood!! <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VSww_2F01OM"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VSww_2F01OM" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
We always play Purdue in Sept, this is the 1966 game...note the snow around the edges of the field. Global Warming had not taken effect apparently. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RSS0BI49VUs"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RSS0BI49VUs" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> Seriously Sid, what was the deal with snow in South Bend in Sept? Pretty unusual isn't it???
Terry, I don't have an answer. I was in my reserve basic training at the time at Ft. Knox. What is interesting is that the players are wearing short-sleeved jerseys on what looks like a warm day. It's a mystery to me.
You were in reserve training? I guess I have your tenure at ND wrong. I was thinking you came in with Ara in 1964, but maybe that would be Malloy.
I graduated in June, '66. Ara'a first year was my junior year. The '66 season was the fall after I graduated. Mike graduated in '69, I think.
"Best game for us was obviously the win over Miami" I would have suggested that for Ohio State but I wasn't sure what other win might have been lurking that I was unaware of. That really was a great win and it was for all the marbles.
Whoa' First of all the '66 game was at ND as I remember. Second, it was a warm day. The play I recall most was Page hitting Griese so hard that the ball went about 10 ft. straight up in the air. BTW seeing the Time cover with Hanratty and Seymour reminds me of sitting in the Huddle one day in a booth next to Jim. Someone had a copy of the latest SI which had Lew Alcinder on the cover. As I recall he was seated on the court and you had to fold it out to see his legs. He said "Not bad....wonder when he'll make Time."
