"Florida cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy faces a misdemeanor marijuana charge. The sophomore was given a notice to appear just after midnight when an officer from the Gainesville Police Department pulled over a car he was a passenger in for a right-of-way violation. According to the arrest report, Purifoy was in the back seat. One of the passengers threw a cannabis cigarette out of the window, but a police officer identified "a baggie containing 2.5 grams of cannabis" near the emergency brake." In this day and age of increased legalization and decriminalization of marijuana use riding in the back seat can get this guy in all kinds of trouble. ....whatever......
When ever I get bored I watch Cops, this is a staple of the show. Kids stopped and the car reaks of weed, they threw out some weed when the cop flashed his lights. They all say they haven't been smoking, when the cop finds the weed they don't know how it got there and usually none of them will admit to smoking.
FWIW I don't believe for a minute that either of my teams (Texas and ND) are free from kids who smoke weed. We've had kids get caught before and some where in the future we will have a kid get caught again. Personally I'm against weed, but I'm curious to see how things work out in Colorodo and Washington where it has recently been legalized.
Another 5 star athlete damaging his lungs and neurons by smoking weed? How come it's always the 4 and 5 star guys doing this? Maybe because the gym is always full of the 2 and 3 star folks, and they can never get in? Maybe that's the reason for the blowout loss to UL....they looked pretty slow to me... decision making was pretty delayed also....yep, lung capacity and AWOL neurons...
I think "slug" was specifically used by George to describe a student athlete that's smoking weed. I'm sure he has different words for other classes of pot smokers. Me, well I would probably use the word fuckhead to describe a STUDENT FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIP ATHLETE that has everything handed to him more so than the average student athlete, and he's doing everything in his power to screw up the "free Pass" to success he's been given.
Well said, AJ. A true Marine's assessment hits the nail squarely on the head. I agree. Young men can be very misguided and can use very poor judgement. The Florida kid is just the latest. The gift of athletic ability does not excuse individuals from responsible behavior, but some simply do not get the message.
"Slug" to me speaks of a person's poor character.....a scum of the earth type. You and George can make that judgement about weed users if that's how you feel. I do not share that belief.
See, there ya go again Dave. I cannot speak for George and his meaning, but mine was specifically tailored to a STUDENT FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIP ATHLETE. I did not fire for effect and wipe out an entire village, I put one well placed round aimed directly at my target, which is the STUDENT FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIP REEFER SMOKING FUCKHEAD ATHLETE.
George, speak of over reaction, a slug? I think that if every college student who used weed was put in jail the campus would be pretty empty. And I imagine that includes Notre Dame. I going to assume for the moment that AJ's reaction is tongue in cheek. Because if either one of you believe what you said then you aren't quite the people I thought you were. And I think highly of both of you.
Bill, I 'm not sure what you mean because I'm not sure you understood my post. I don't know the answer, so I'll ask; is Purifoy on a Full Ride FB Scholarship?
Bill, forget for a moment that this kid is a Gator. George and AJ were speaking in generalities. If this kid was a Vol, I would use even stronger words. To risk a free education that will be worth millions and the shot at going pro worth even more borders on being a mental midget. These student athletes come in to college athletics knowing that their chances of making the pros are very slim even IF they do everything right and strive to be their best. How would you describe someone that is given so much and risks throwing it away on drugs, alcohol, etc. Other than the descriptions of George and AJ, the only other description that comes to mind is a democrat voting welfare recipient playing video games on the couch all day while wagering their food stamps.
I started writing my post then left to do something else and came back and finished it then went on to help a house guest with something then came back to the topic. And i find there were a number of posts between mine and the last one i read, mostly AJ's. So I have a better idea where you guys are coming from and my thinking about slug is close to what MCG said. After saying that I will say that I don't differ two much from AJ and Tom's thinking except that in reality these guys getting the free rides as you say are also among the most macho guys on campus and no matter you opinion of them doing things like he did the reality is that it goes on, and I would easily venture to say at Nebraska and Tennessee also. You don't throw the guy away for a first offense in my opinion. However I think you will find that our current coach is much less tolerant of this type coach than Urban Meyer was and if he doesn't walk the straight and narrow from from here on out he could find himself at Alabama State.
Do you ever sit around and wonder how we reached the diminished level we find ourselves in as a society? It wasn't one seminal moment; it was a 1000 different concessions that we made over the last 50 years. This kid has one shot to get out of the hood and make himself a productive member of society. And the U of F gave it to him. 95% of young folks have to pay their own way. Guys like my kid spend an inordinate amount of their time keeping goofballs like this from hurting themselves or others on the highways. I don't care who's uniform he is wearing. At this moment in time, he is a slug.
So George when you were in the age range of 17 - 23 what kind of things did you do in the area of drugs or drinking? Were you perfect? I can tell you that in the 50's that students in college were, GASP, drinking illegally. That may come as a shock but it was true. Lot's of it as a matter of fact. It was illegal but we did it. Nothing I said was condoning it but in my mind recognizing reality. If you were perfect at that age then good for you. However I would wager you weren't and even if you were I would wager you have good friends who weren't. I am not trying to change your mind but do not agree with you especially as far as a first offense.
It's not a Florida thing with me Bill. It's not a throw a kid under the Bus thing. It's a "I don't give a **** about your gift thing" with me. In the USMC, we had a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY for Illegal drugs. There's has been, and I have dealt directly with Marines who have tested positive/caught with/etc..and yes, the Gunner informed them that they were a F head... Then we would evaluate the whole situation and apply it to the "Whole Marine Concept". If we deemed the Marine to be remorseful and salvageable, we would work with them and grant a second chance...and only a second chance. It's absolutely Bye, Bye next time. See, from the cloth I'm cut from, it was a privileged to wear the prideful and history laden uniform of Marines. To dishonor those before us would be just that. To wear the uniform of any college FB team has a very similar meaning. To be lucky enough in today's times to have a God given talent that opens a door to success that not many have, and intentionally sabotage it with selfish individualistic behavior, doesn't fly with me. It amazes me the lack of respect that is given to that fact. Should one of my boys (please God both) has the PRIVILEGE of getting a full ride schollie, I will guarantee you I will be on their ass to make them realize exactly what an honor and opportunity that was presented to them, and if you F it Up with YOUR BAD DECISIONS...that makes you a F Head in my book. I hope the young man learns from this and gets a second chance. I don't have a ZERO DEFECT MENTALITY by any means, but if he or any other STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP ATHLETE gets caught doing it again...hopefully after applying the Whole Person Concept to the situation...then's it's Bye, Bye. Bottom line with me: He's an Athlete that needs to be in pristine mental and physical shape in order to perform, protect his health, and body. Friggin' Weed and Booze ain't Creatine. The university gives you everything you need to make this happen, including an education, FOR FREE. They expect the Tat after they give you the Tit. Sounds fair to me, where can I sign up?
AJ, in answer to your question before yes he is a full ride scholarship player. I don't believe in a zero tolerance, meaning one strike and your out policy for college students in general not just football players. I believe in using good judgement and I also believe that young people that age are going to do stupid things. I am not ashamed to say that I did and I was a pretty mild mannered low key guy. But in college I did some dumb things. I don't believe in throwing people under the bus for one mistake. I also don't believe in letting your players get away with multiple mistakes to the point that they aren't afraid of getting caught because the punishment will be minimal. Unfortunately in hindsight Meyer was guilty of that at Florida but from what I see Muschamp will be fairly quick to send you on your way to a new location.
