Could this be a year where nobody breaks par for the tournament? Kevin Na posted a video on his instagram account of the rough...holy cow! Better be in the fairways this week! Penalty is severe. https://www.instagram.com/p/BVNSL7OBWMu/ My picks... Not Phil Mickelson! Not Jordan Spieth! Wild with the driver isn't going to work Not Bubba Watson! I think it'll be somebody who is precise with his drives...like maybe Zach Johnson.
They made an interesting case that this years Open being the longest in histroy isn't really as long as the 1930 Open due to the gains in equipement. This would have to be over 8000yds to be equivalent.
Tiger Woods to rehab...shocking I know. Apparently it's partly due to the chance he could lose his partial custody of his children if he doesn't.
Well we're off.. Listening to the guru's on Golf Channel, and btw I've come to really like David Duval as an analyst, the long hitters are going to dominate this course. When I saw Na's video I thought it was going to be the opposite but everybody thinks that at least -5 will be needed to win. I see that Davis Love III is carrying the bag for his son Dru Love ...I hope Dad is in good shape. They talk about what a physical test it will be for the players...how about those caddies who carry a 30lb bag that same distance. If you have a fitbit, Rickie Fowler said his practice round was 19,000 steps.
Day had 2 triple bogies. I watched one of them. 3 tries to chip the ball onto the green....been there, done that!
Love the shot of Cameron Champ shaking hands with his playing partner... And the item in Champ's pocket sticks up just high enough to read: GIG'EM 8)
Koepka had an amazing round today, he just over powered the course and also showed a good touch with the putter and wedge. And we have yet another 1st time winner in the Majors. All the big guns went home early. The dreaded rough was rough when you got in it for sure but those fairways were so wide it didn't really make much of a difference and then the rain softened the course and it was sort of defenseless. Personally I don't really care all that much for the wide open no tree's courses. I expect that Shinnecock Hills will be a much more traditional US Open. I wonder if Native American groups will protest the racist symbol for the course! I wonder if any Native Americans are members?
I did find this old article about the Shinnecock tribe and the club. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/10/nyregion/in-brief-southampton-shinnecock-golf-club-drops-its-indian-logo.html?_r=0
