14 days until the first big Sat of the season. Florida plays Michigan and Alabama and FSU meet with both teams expected to be in the hunt for the playoffs.
Not college ball but a teaser to the season are some pretty good high school football games on tap.... ESPN has announced a seven-game schedule for the 2017 GEICO ESPN High School Football Kickoff that features six defending state champions and five of the top six teams in the final Super 25 rankings. The games are scheduled for Aug. 25-27 and will appear on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. Among players in the ESPN300, 29 will be featured, including the top two: Cartersville (Ga.) quarterback Trevor Lawrence and IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) defensive end Xavier Thomas. The Kickoff event also includes a doubleheader at the same site. Saraland (Ala.) faces Heard County (Ga.) followed by Bartram Trail (Fla.) against Cartersville. The games should be a QB showcase with Jack West for Saraland, Ohio State commit Emory Jones for Heard County, Auburn commit Joey Gatewood for Bartram Trail and Lawrence for Cartersville. Three-time defending Super 25 champion Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) host DeMatha (Hyattsville), which was No. 4 a year ago, in the second game Friday night. That follows No. 5 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) against No. 6 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.). IMG Academy, which finished No. 2, faces Chandler (Ariz.) in the Saturday nightcap. ESPN will announce its regular season schedule in the High School Football Showcase at a later date. Here is the full schedule for the opening weekend (all times Eastern): Friday, Aug. 25 St. John Bosco (Calif.) vs. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.), 7 p.m., ESPNU DeMatha (Md.) vs. Bishop Gorman (Nev.), 9 p.m., ESPN Saturday, Aug. 26 Tulsa Union (Okla.) vs. Broken Arrow (Okla.), Noon, ESPN Saraland (Ala.) vs. Heard County (Ga.), 3:30 p.m., ESPNU Bartram Trail (Fla.) vs. Cartersville (Ga.), 7:30 p.m., ESPN2 IMG Academy (Fla.) vs. Chandler (Ariz.), 10:30 p.m., ESPNU Sunday, Aug. 27 Wayne (Ohio) vs. Pine-Richland (Pa.), 1:30 p.m., ESPN side note Miami commit Artur Sitkowski threw two touchdown passes and ran for a touchdown as No. 2 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) overcame early mistakes to defeat No. 20 Carol City (Miami Gardens) 41-22 in a preseason game Friday.
Something Florida has always done, we called them jamborees when I was in school but now they are called preseason. It's basically what it says, it's a preseason warm up game with no meaning or effect on the record for the season. In our rural area four teams would gather up and split quarters playing each other a week before the season started.
Ralph, With your widespread knowledge of football, both high school, and college, I hope you break down and join our Yahoo Pick'em contest this fall.
Those jamborees in Florida go all the way back to when I was in high school in the fifties and before. 13 days and counting. Yeah Ralph you need to be in pickem.
In Alabama, you have the choice of playing a jamboree or you can play a regular season (pre-season) game. The difference is that the jamboree doesn't count on your schedule while the pre-season game does. After going to a regular season game for a few years, Carson's HS returned to playing a jamboree in Week 0 last year and this year.
PS If anyone chooses to watch Saraland play in the Saturday day game, their QB has been committed to Stanford for more than a year now. There were people who seemed really butt hurt about it at the time. Before he was even considered a 'ranked' QB, he was locked in at Stanford as a sophomore. They are a very good team that plays in Carson's division. They've been bounced early in the state playoffs the past 2 years because 6A football in Alabama is ridiculously deep. You can throw a dart at the 6A schedule on a Friday night and you're gonna hit a really good football game more than likely. The kid playing for Heard County, GA has committed to Ohio State. Should be a good QB battle.
Bahahaha, I'm the most ignorant sports fan of this motley crew called skybox and surprised you allow me to keep posting... I'll think about it one more time though, I find it hard to keep up once our harvest season kicks in..Thank you gents and you too Scott :x
