A good hire, Tom has Texas roots from stints at Texas State and Rice so he knows the state. Good Luck to him. Rice is doing fairly well in CUSA and there is room for UofH to do well in the AAC. They really do seem committed to having a good program over there and no reason looking at all the talent within 300 miles of Houston that they can't have a good program even if the elite kids are going to go to the SEC or B12 for the most part.
Timing is always an issue on these job changes. I hope he will be able to coach here thru the playoffs, but that may be a problem as well? Congratulations to Tom and his family, it was only a matter of time and a good fit for him.
Yeah timing is a problem. I'm sure Houston wants him to be working on putting together his staff and getting up to speed on recruiting. I haven't seen a lot of guys stay with their old team through the bowl season, but then this is the playoffs. I've seen it where the guy leaves and then comes back for the few days surrounding the bowl game. Of course Urban Meyer refused to leave Utah for UF until after the Sugar Bowl game, but that's the exception. Several Pro Coaches have stayed with their teams and worked after hours on staff and recruting. Charlie did it when he came to ND and it hurt the program, O'Brien did it when he took the PSU job but that program had just been punched in the mouth by the Sandusky scandals so it didn't really matter.
Terry, no official word here by Ohio State until an official hire has been announced. Fans on local BB's are saying he will coach thru January 1st, but that is idle speculation. A fan even started a rumor he was taking Barrett with him to Houston!
Darrell Hazell didn't leave Kent State for Purdue until after their bowl game, and it absolutely killed his first recruiting year. Hope UM's been planning for this. Anyone could have seen it coming.
Houston Chronicle said this morning that Hermann is expected to remain with Ohio State through the playoffs. Also reportedly to hire Major Applewhite as his OCoord.
I guess it's official now. Herman has signed a five-year contract for 6.5 million. He will remain with the Buckeyes through the playoffs.
