After being asked if he thought Florida would beat Georgia… ”Is Ray Goff still coaching there?” 3. “I know why Peyton came back for his senior year: he wanted to be a three-time Citrus Bowl MVP” 4. “In 12 years at Florida, I don’t think we ever signed a kid from the state of Alabama…Of course, we found out later that the scholarships they were giving out at Alabama were worth a whole lot more than ours.” 5. And if it ends up not being good enough, then so be it.” ----------- 2, 4, 5 and 7 are my favorites..
Still love Spur Dog......he will always be a Gator first and foremost. He knows it......and the fans know it. What will Spurrier say next was always a fun question. He had the teams at Florida by and large that could back up his brashness. That was the difference between a Lane Kiffin and a Steve Spurrier. When you don't have the team to back it up you look foolish......but when you do have the team you may piss people off......but you look like a winnner.
Don't get me wrong. I hate Lane Kiffin way more than most people of reasonable sanity levels. You do realize though, that Spurrier was the youngest coach in professional football at the age of 37 when the Tampa Bay Bandits of the USFL hired him. In 1987, at the age of 41 Spurrier accepted the head job at Duke. Right now, this very second, Lane Kiffin is 37 years old. Now we can talk about burned bridges, lies told, his bragging, whining etc. However, he's still a work in progress and a quite young one at that. People seem to lose track of this.
I think you finally put it into words that will come back to bite you one day Dave. If I read this right, you are of the belief that as long as you can back it up, bullying is justified.
No bullying is not justified. However I personally don't see Spurrier's quotes as bullying. Blunt, sarcastic but mostly with a bit of humor. I remember a quote that I don't think I could find, but one time a writer tried to make an issue with Phil Fulmer about Spurrier. Fulmer said that Spurrier was a class act. I'll give that Kiffin is a work in progress and we will see how he matures. I'm not optimistic and I am not sure he will last at USC.
