From what I have been reading lately Tebow seems to be moving up in peoples opinion as to where he will go in the draft. His work on his motion may be paying off. Here's an interesting article comparing college stats of 6 QB's. Comparing Six QB's college stats.
He's a risky pick. I hope he makes it, but I wouldn't take him before the 3rd round. While I can understand he's a hard worker and don't doubt he's made progress with his mechanics, it's one thing to do it in throwing drills and another thing to do it while under center trying to read the defense and having NFL pressure put on you.
Here's the stats on one QB's college season. Note in that one season he threw for half the TDs and nearly half the total yardage of Tebow. That QB was Andre Ware. He was an absolute bust in the pros. Stats are for losers.
JoePa thought Jim Kelly was a linebacker coming out of HS, Miami wanted him to play QB. Maybe Kelly see's some of himself in Tebow. Of course when Kelly lived here in Houston and played for the Gamblers, he was supposedly a hedonistic young man who partied heavily...so I don't imagine he see's a kindred spirit in that regards.
I don't think they are kindred spirits in that regard either Terry. I do think that the linebacker / quarterback thing is a bit of a connection. It seems that Kelly is wanting to own part of the Bills so I don't think this is a publicity stunt on his part either. I've seen a number of mock drafts recently that have Tebow in the first or second round. All of them have Bradford and Clausen going in the top 5- 6 picks. McCoy seems to be in about the same position as Tebow.
Seems that Peter King has now moved Tebow into the first round also. Seems his stock is rising. Peter King's 32 first round picks.
3rd round. He is also a risk, a great college QB, but hasn't been physically able to do much since the injury in Jan. He's supposedly ready to go now for the Longhorn pro day which I believe was today. Colt is, like Tim Tebow, a great leader, a true Christian, and a guy who really does everything possible to improve his game and is tough as nails. But he played in a system that did not prepare him for the NFL. He hasn't shown a particularily strong arm, many of his passes were short passes that got a lot of yardage, and he's never worked much under center. I do think he can succeed in the NFL, but it will take a few years of learning before he is ready. He won't be one of those guys who goes from College to NFL starter. I wouldn't mind either Tebow or McCoy on the Texans roster, our current QB is in his prime and barring injury those guys could sit and learn and wait their turn. Terry
That stat surprises even me. Tebow stacks up better against the SEC's best far more than I would have imagined.
As has been pointed out many college QB with incredible stats, think Grahamn Harrell of Texas Tech, aren't esp great Pro prospects.
After not getting drafted and failing in a tryout with the Browns, he went to Canada and signed with the Roughriders, but I don't believe he played very much if at all. If I remember correctly he broke almost all, if not all, of the the career passing records in the NCAA. I do fear that with Kelly's spread offense, even if he's wildly successfull, will produce any more great ND Pro QB's. He could win a lot of games, but the QB's won't be "NFL ready". Colt McCoy faces that, he was incredibly successful at Texas, won more games in his career than any QB in NCAA history, was extremely accurate throwing the ball, but again mostly quick passes less than 15 yds. While Jimmy Clausen, worked under center and threw a mixture of passes that is similar to what NFL QB's did and Clausen is likely to be #2. I maintain that had Clausen's 2009 ND team had a defense and he hadn't injured his toe that he would have been the #1 overall draft pick. But he's going to get a good payday never the less!
On the other hand, Brady Quinn studied at the foot of the master in the pro set. How is his pro career going?
It's tough to make it as a NFL QB, really there are less than 10 at any one time that you'd have to say have really made it. The rest are journeyman. Brady may be a journeyman, but I haven't given up on him yet.
Colt McCoy had an excellent workout at the Longhorn Pro Day. McCoy It will be interesting to see if he goes in the 1st or 2nd round...I think 3rd round is the spot, but who knows somebody might just really like the kid.
