Am I the only one who tends to be a bit of a skeptic when it comes to articles like this with high school players who have not even reached their senior year yet...?? http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/06/21/1691417/st-thomas-aquinas-wr-dorsett-commits.html
Clock is ticking faster for kids these days, not just athletes. A lot of kids graduate early and want to get on to colllege and then want to get through college to get to a job....jokes on them....best days are school days!! But regards recruiting, players are commiting earlier and earlier, I'm sure you read about the 7th grade QB who has "verbally" committed to USC and Lane Kiffin. Hurry up and get to the NFL...enroll early, play as a freshman, go to the league after your jr. year. If the NFL didn't have a rule, you'd see some one and dones just like basketball.
Not so much between their junior and senior years. Actually I think these earlier commitments are partially the results of some excesses in the past, remember Lobster Willie? The 7th grade commits are silly, but between the junior and senior years, not so much. I also think that some coaches like Joe Pa and Mack Brown who have always gotten earlier commitments also help drive the earlier time frames now. Then I agree with Terry also.
