I haven't weighed in on this topic because I am leery of anything the NCAA gets involved with and this case is no exception. But it looks like the NCAA is now sharpening it's sword over the incident: http://www.foxsportsohio.com/msn/04/24/11/NCAA-issues-list-of-violations-to-Ohio-S/landing_ohiostate.html?blockID=510237&feedID=3725 I am still treading lightly on this because I hesitate to ever take the side of the NCAA in these cases.
Nothing much new here. Only thing I saw new was that Tressel was in contact with the FBI about the allegations. Kind of strange way of covering it up, don't you think? We'll get dinged because he didn't follow NCAA policy and rules...and that's fair enough.
I posted on another topic....agreed Stu. No news here other than the FBI reference and the NCAA will not bring down the failure to monitor and lack of institutional control and this will continue to be a hot subject for opinions and speculation without the full details until August......
Sterwart Mandel thinks Tressel is on borrowed time. Tressel on borrowed time at Ohio State in wake of NCAA allegations
He's not alone.....but unless the NCAA forces the hand of the administration by issuing a "show cause", I don't see him leaving. He has said that he was going to stick it out and they have expressed their firm support....there have been no additional revelations in the case about which they were unaware at the time of their statements in support...... unless the Buckeye Nation turns against him, the NCAA issues a "show cause" in August or new info of wrongdoing come to light, I don't see him going anywhere and I hope he guts it out.....it will be extraordinarily tough on all involved however.
Herbstriet chimed in today with some things that I can't imagine endear him to OSU fans. I hope for his sake he's moved already to Nashville. Herbstreit on Tressel
I suspect without any facts that the NCAA tells schools in this position "if this individual that lied to us is going to keep his job, we'll make sure that you'll regret that decision. If violations happened that reflects badly on you, if you allow it to go with just token punishment, we question your institutional control." Something in the past has compelled other schools to dump the coach. This will be an interesting contest.
The thing you can't do is lie to the NCAA. This has been fact for God knows how long... and if you do lie to the NCAA, because it has and will happen, you better not ever get caught. He got caught. I don't see a good way out of this for him. At what point in time is Ohio State bigger than CJT? I guess we'll find out.
I've always admired Tressel greatly but I think he is in real trouble. I would not be shocked to hear of his resignation at any moment.
Here is why the NCAA can be a moronic entity with no sense of reason or fairness: http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/1990-09-22/sports/9009221063_1_university-of-florida-football-coach-punishment Galen Hall was a good man.......who never admitted to assisting the player with his delinquent child support payment although I believe he later admitted to giving him the 30 mile ride to an Ocala courthouse to make the payment. This article reeks of the end result of the witch hunt that was the 1989 investigation of Florida. The NCAA lead investigator David Berst was sure he could nail the Gators for major violations and prove lack of institutional control and this was all he could come up with so the NCAA trumped it up as best they could......making a mountain out of a molehill. Hall was subsequently fired after that admission of giving the ride and that was the single infraction that incredibly kept Steve Spurrier's first Florida team from being the 1990 SEC Champion and playing in the Sugar Bowl 2 full years later. UF fans will always be bitter about that and most of us do not have any respect for the decision making capability of the NCAA and we remain leery of their autonomous dictatorial powers. If the OSU administration thinks getting rid of Tressel will lessen their penalties then it would be best they do just that.......or else. If the NCAA gets a bug up their ass about nailing the Buckeyes and specifically Tressel then it won't be pretty.....or necessarily fair.
...Herby burned his bridges in Columbus long ago, this is just his childish way putting the knife in and twisting it......tell me one program of any note that DID NOT recruit Clarett and Pryor? In both cases they were the most sought after recruits in the nation. Give me a break Herby, what a crock. While I'm not sure about TP, in MC's case he finished high school early, enrolled at Ohio State early in time for spring practice and his work ethic was the stuff of which legends were made.....everybody knows what happened next, but the benefit of hindsight makes everybody a genius, possibly even Herbstreit. About JT, I continue to take him at his word and give him the benefit of the doubt on the basis of his entire body of work while acknowledging he made a poor judgement. My personal view is that college football needs more men in leadership positions like JT rather than fewer and the game will be better served - all things considered - if he survives but I understand that there are many that feel exactly the opposite. The pressure will be intense but believe that unless the NCAA plays the "show cause" card, that the admin and Buckeye Nation will continue to back him and he will have the convictions to withstand the storm...hang in there Coach....
I'm a big Herbstreit fan. I find him fair and balanced, so to speak. I'm sure he gets no satisfaction in speaking poorly about his alma mater. The fact that he moved his family in some part because of fear for their safety in Columbus may say something about perspective in that area. They hate him on the IRish BBs too because when we stunk he held his nose.
I too think Herbie is normally fair and balanced in his commentary. Maybe in his younger ESPN days he tried too hard not to show bias for OSU and came across as dissing his alma mater to the Buckeye fan base. I doubt that is how he feels however or that he would make conscious attempts to show it if he actually did feel that way.
I agree that he gets no satisfaction in speaking poorly about his alma mater.....that said, the notion that we should not be recruiting the likes of Clarett and Pryor is just absurd and unnecessary. Who didn't? The fact that we were successful singles us out for his barbs.....that's not fair and balanced, just a stupid remark. Shall we go down the roster of every high profile program and apply the same standard with the benefit of hindsight? I'm quite certain that our kids would hold up just fine under that scrutiny..... He didn't get any love when he suggested years ago that he wouldn't recommend any elite offensive players to play the conservative brand of offense that Tressell prefers in C'bus and he didn't endear himself at the end of this past season when he dropped us several places in his final poll after winning the Sugar Bowl.....the only two ballots in which that occurred were Chris Fowler and Kirk Herstreit.....fair and balanced, I don't think so. Without a doubt there is very little perspective in C'bus when it comes to the Buckeye Nation, but Spielman and Kellogg are both alums in high profile, national broadcast jobs. They are much beloved and they don't seem to have the same issues with the faithful, nor are they over the top homers....for that, Herby needs only to look into the mirror.
I am conflicted here with a lot of thoughts. Not so much about Ohio State but the whole process. Like MCG said a lot of us Gators will never forget what happened with our last run in with the NCAA. Galen Hall and Norm Sloan, our BB coach, were thrown under the buss in fear of the lack of institutional control issue. Neither deserved our fate. I do remember a lot of people taking shots at the Gators in the 90's who now as they have their issues with the NCAA suddenly learn what we have known since that time. I also see that the NCAA has taken a path of lessor penalties no one has been hit like SMU or the Gators in 1984, both were made examples. We learned and have a program more issue free than about any other major program at this point and I pray we keep it that way. I don't have any advice for Ohio State but I have to agree with BT about Herbstreits remarks about recruiting those players. Everybody was recruiting them. All I can do is wish Ohio State fans well and hope that in the long run this works out well for the good fans of Ohio State as all College football fans in general.
Hey Bill.... Maybe an ultra powerful and clandestine UF alumni group is behind all of these NCAA paybacks over the years for those who threw stones from glass houses......whaddya think?
While this comment may be a bit premature, it would appear that Ohio State intends to accept whatever punishment the NCAA demands, and keep Jim Tressel as the head coach. What troubles me is his apparent lack of accountability and not coming forth voluntarily with his indiscretions. I do not demean his action in trying to protect his players, but you cannot lie to the NCAA without severe sanctions. Chris Speilman is addressing these same issues. The university must come first and Jim Tressel second.
I don't recall too many Buckeye fans on these boards celebrating at other school's problems. I will remember those who are now trying to dance on our grave.
