That will be very interesting to see Mike Leach at Tenn. He has been successful at Texas Tech and at Washington State, Tenn is a level up in expectations that's for sure and recruiting is different. But his offenses will be exciting and if he brings his DCoord with him it will be interesting to see how he builds a SEC defense.
OK this is an interesting twist...Tenn just fired their Ath Director http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/21629194/tennessee-volunteers-athletic-director-john-currie-part-amid-tumultuous-coaching-search
Phil Fulmer to be the leader of the search now. I wonder if Phil would like to be AD? He certainly loves Tenn and knows Tenn.
I just read a hatchet job rumor piece that Fulmer was behind the scenes stabbing this guy in the back all along. It's not like we haven't heard that about him before, but I kinda doubt this one is true. I love how people throw around 'SEC defense' like everyone is Alabama....
I hear that they accepted Tom's recommendation to fire Currie but passed on his second suggestion. They haven't disclosed publicly his second suggestion.
Tom would have tied that poor SOB naked to the rock, tarred and feathered him and then let the students spray paint him...
Corey, Usually you had better have a very, very good defense (ie. Georgia, Auburn and Alabama this year) if you want to have a chance in the SEC. I think it is also true all over the country for teams that vie for NC's.
But like you said, that's true for anyone who wants to win an NC. You named the 3 defenses in the SEC this year, where was the rest of them? What I am getting at is that it's put out there like they all have these all-world defenses and that's simply not true. Maybe it will in the near future, but it hasn't been that way for some time now. It's pretty much Bama and this year's Johnny come lately.
LSU and Miss St. also had highly ranked defenses. So this year at least a run through the SEC West had very little margin for error. I didn't make the statement in this thread but while a lot of SEC offenses may not be so good, usually their defenses are their better half. 8)
a lot of those great defensive numbers were piled up against not so great teams. I mean, if you objectively look at their schedules.
One SEC East defense slipped all the way down to 31st in total defense this season but in the previous 9 seasons finished in the NCAA stats anywhere from #4 to #9 in total defense in 8 of those 9 seasons finishing at #15 in the other. And that was just an average SEC team.... didn't win the league title in 8 of those 9 seasons.
Corey, that may be true. So are you suggesting that the defensive rankings are good for the Big 10 but are misleading for the SEC? Hey I think I've heard that before. CFB rankings are biased for the SEC but they are good for the rest of the country. Talk about getting tired!
