California bill would let children have more than two parents

    Home - by Cardigan - July 2, 2012 - 19:30 America/New_York - 23 Comments

    Kansas City star

    Beaver had June and Ward.

    Ricky had Ozzie and Harriet.

Mom and Dad, same-sex couples or blended families, California law is clear: No more than two legal parents per child.

When adults fight over parenthood, a judge must decide which two have that right and responsibility – but that could end soon.

State Sen. Mark Leno is pushing legislation to allow a child to have multiple parents.

“The bill brings California into the 21st century, recognizing that there are more than Ozzie and Harriet families today,” the San Francisco Democrat said.

Surrogate births, same-sex parenthood and assisted reproduction are changing society by creating new possibilities for nontraditional households and relationships.

Benjamin Lopez, legislative analyst for the Traditional Values Coalition, blasted Leno’s bill as a new attempt to “revamp, redefine and muddy the waters” of family structure by a leader in the drive to legalize gay marriage.

“It comes as no surprise that he would try to say that a child has more than two parents – that’s absurd,” said Lopez, whose group calls itself a leading voice for Bible-based values.

Under Leno’s bill, if three or more people who acted as parents could not agree on custody, visitation and child support, a judge could split those things up among them.

SB 1476 is not meant to expand the definition of who can qualify as a parent, only to eliminate the limit of two per child.

Under current law, a parent can be a man who signs a voluntary declaration of paternity, for example. It also can be a man who was married and living with a child’s mother, or who took a baby into his home and represented the infant as his own.

Leno’s bill, which has passed the Senate and is now in the Assembly, would apply equally to men or women, and to straight or gay couples.

Examples of three-parent relationships that could be affected by SB 1476 include:

California Considers Bill Dubbed “Anti-Arizona” Law That Bans Law Enforcement From Detaining Illegal Immigrants…
    [IMG]
No need to wonder why California is circling the drain.

(Reuters) — While America’s debate over immigration has been dominated recently by crackdowns in states like Arizona and Alabama, California legislators are trying to turn that tide with a bill to protect illegal immigrants that they dub the “anti-Arizona.”

Last week, the top U.S. court upheld the most controversial aspect of Arizona’s immigration statute: a requirement that police officers check the immigration status of people they stop, even for minor offenses such as jay-walking.

Enter California, a border state that is home to the largest number of illegal immigrants, most of whom are Hispanic, and is considerably more liberal than its neighbor Arizona.

A bill currently working its way through the California legislature would block local law enforcement from referring a detainee to immigration officials for deportation unless that person has been convicted of a violent or serious felony.

“California cannot afford to become another Arizona,” said California Assembly member Tom Ammiano, the bill’s sponsor. One of the bill’s sponsors, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, calls the effort the “anti-Arizona.”

Critics have argued that Arizona’s law could lead to illegal racial or ethnic profiling of Hispanics in Arizona. Hispanics are the largest U.S. minority group, representing 16 percent of the population.

Supporters of the Arizona law say it is needed because the federal government has failed to secure the border with Mexico.

 wolverine good but I would take an eathquake a big one. to make all the non Californians to flee.... or maybe the liberals fall into the depths of the earth just open up and swallow them.... and their bullet train to no where. the Sierra's are extremely beautiful and I wouldnt be surprised at what you could find. especially in the back mountains that you have to hike to see. We see eagles in alot of different areas near our home in Big BEar there was a reserve. Where Corey and his baseball team played near Napa we could sit in the stands and watch them . But a wolverine like a bear and a mountain lion really wouldnt want to come face to face with.

    :!:
Since January 1, California has had some rare vistors not seen in these parts since the 19th century. Among these are the wolverine in your story and an Alaskan timberwolf. All we know for sure is that these things are coming down from Oregon and they take a lot of drugs up there...

The city of San Bernardino has filed for bankruptcy protection.

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/07/san-bernardino-files-for-bankruptcy-protection.html

San Bernardino is the capitol of our county and I'm a graduate of the university there. As with all these other bankrupt California cities, they were totally controlled by the lib/Dems who bought votes with promises of "free" public services for decades. Now...the music has stopped.

Gov. Moonbeam has an initiative on the November ballot to save the state. It will pay for everything, including the massive lib/Dem spending increases of the last few years by raising taxes ONLY on the citizens who make more than $250,000 per year. It makes no difference that almost all of those people already pay 70% of all taxes collected; nor does it matter that nearly all of these people are either small business owners or retired public workers. What does matter, is that the total number of all these "millionaires and billionaires" is about 156,000 out of 36 million. When they leave...and they're moving to Nevada and Arizona as I write... the tax system will collapse.

Governor Christie just told the Feds to stop sending stimulus money earmarked for the hiring of public employees. He said we have plenty of money and plenty of government workers.

Arizona Thanks California For “Anti-Arizona” Bill

    Home - by Cardigan - July 12, 2012 - 14:45 America/New_York - 19 Comments

PHOENIX (BHN) – In a statement issued on behalf of Arizona residents today, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer publicly thanked California lawmakers for passing their “Anti-Arizona” immigration bill:

    Dear California Lawmakers,

Your bill prohibiting California law enforcement authorities from checking immigration status on suspected illegal immigrants charged with crimes perfectly dovetails with our new law giving our law enforcement personnel the authority to actually enforce federal and state immigration laws.

As you read this, no doubt thousands of illegal immigrants are leaving our state for yours. Congratulations and thanks!”

    Arizona Governor Jan Brewer

PS: Sorry to hear your state is broke, this move should really help

My comments: There are reports of hundreds of old, clapped-out Honda Civic lowriders with fart can exhausts and pounding stereos heading west this morning – thanks again California!

I saw that the City Council has been faking reports for years to cover up that they were going broke.

They will all file eventually. The Firefighter's Union has at least one person on every city council in this state and that's not an exaggeration. By controlling the city councils, the firefighters are able to set their own salaries and retirement benefits. When you realize that most other council members belong to the California Teacher's Association or the police unions, it's not surprising to learn how the 3% of workers who belong to public employee unions control the other 97%.

BTW- I've known a lot of California firefighters and I've never known one who didn't drive a Mercedes Benz...

Gip I was listening to somebody on radio, either Dennis Miller or a NPR...and they were specifically discussing San Bernadino. Said that the City Attny has uncovered faked financials that covered up a ton of crap.

edit: quick google turned up this.

As California Closed State Parks, 54 Million Found Unreported in Park Coiffers – Parks Director Resigns Amid Scandal

    Home - by BigFurHat - July 20, 2012 - 22:30 America/New_York - 7 Comments

Ahhhhh, the left. They ought to just install direct deposit machines in their refrigerator’s freezer.

    Mercury News
    [IMG]
The director of California’s state parks system resigned Friday after officials discovered that her department had $54 million in unspent money in its accounts that it had not reported to the state finance department, even while the state said parks were so short of money that many needed to be closed.

Ruth Coleman, who had led the agency since 2003, stepped down, and the department’s second-in-command, Acting Chief Deputy Director Michael Harris, was fired.

California Natural Resources Secretary John Laird said the state Attorney General’s Office will be investigating and the state Department of Finance will be conducting a comprehensive audit.

“It’s our goal to make sure we get to the bottom of this,” Laird said.

Laird said that the parks department had $20.4 million in an account that takes money from park entrance fees and concession contracts, and $33.5 million in the state’s off-highway vehicle fund, that the department had essentially kept shielded from the state finance department for more than a decade.

The disclosure comes at a politically difficult time for Gov. Jerry Brown, who pushed for more than a year to close 70 state parks — one quarter of the entire park system — to save $22 million as part of efforts to balance the state’s budget.

Anaheim hit by more protests over police shooting

We're watching the riots on TV and listening to them on the radio behind me. The illegal alien/gang banger protesters are looting Starbucks, drug stores, liquor stores etc. When they approached Disneyland, the heavy hand of local law enforcement came down hard and they retreated in a different direction. It's generally understood that if Disneyland ever left town there would be no Anaheim...and probably no Orange County except for the beach communities...

Great article JO'Co and very, very true. This is not a problem defined only to California but the rest of the U.S. as well where the disconnect from the coastline to the heartland is as far as day is from night. What sets the Central Valley apart is that it produces 8% of the nations agricultural output on less than 1 percent of the total farmland in the United States. An outstanding accomplishment. This disconnect is part of the core problem that has evolved into the political bickering that prevents us from agreeing on anything.

California Democrats Trying To Give Illegal Immigrants Driver’s Licenses…
    [IMG]
    Via SF Gate:

Democratic legislators are working with Gov. Jerry Brown and Department of Motor Vehicles officials to provide driver’s licenses to hundreds of thousands of young undocumented immigrants now eligible to work under President Obama’s new “deferred action” policy.

“In the past, the argument against providing driver’s licenses has been that it would be rewarding someone who has broken the law,” said state Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco. “But now we’re talking about people who, by definition, have not broken any laws.”

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, announced by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano in June, allows undocumented immigrants younger than 31 who were brought to this country illegally before they were 16 to apply for protection from deportation for a two-year renewable term. It applies to young people who are in school, completed school or served honorably in the armed forces and who do not have serious criminal records.

It’s a much-watered-down version of the Dream Act for young immigrants, which Obama and his fellow Democrats have been unable to get through Congress.
