Ok.... we all know how cyclical college football can be. Always it seems there is a rise and subsequest fall and most times a resurgence of the major college championship caliber teams... like Alabama and Clemson. Right now these two are seemingly light years ahead of everyone else but we all know it won't last forever.... it's the college cycle at work. Things like Swinney deciding suddenly he wants to take his game to the pros.... or Saban deciding to suddenly retire... for health or family reasons... etc. Sometimes an Urban Meyer retires and great things happen anyway.... like what is expected of Ohio State ( but not yet guaranteed )..... or a team begins to slip a little and then flounders.... like Florida did after Urban "retired"..... So.... I wonder.... which program is going south real soon.... Bama? Clemson? Ohio State? Michigan.... again? Oklahoma? Notre Dame?
USC hasn't been the same since Pete Carroll went to the NFL. I will tell you I have a lot of interest in how Ryan Day does at Ohio State, the conventional wisdom is that at big time programs you need the experience as a HC at a lesser program with less resources and not the talent level. That's how you hone your skills, then you get the big job and shine. But Ryan Day hasn't ever been a HC, neither had Lincoln Riley and they are the 2 hottest young coaches out there right now. Riley does have actual accomplishments to point to and maybe Day will after this season. Other coaches I am very interested in how they might do at their new jobs is the guy who took over for Bill Snyder at KState, Chris Klieman. He was incredibly successful at North Dakota State, much like Jim Tressel was incredibly successful at Youngstown State. Can he take KSU back to where they were in the days when Bill Snyder had them in the top 10 and competing for B12 titles? Going to be interesting to watch Neb as well, Scott Frost had the team playing well at the end of the season, how is this year going to play out. Is the Big Red Train rolling? Staying in the B10, Brian Brohm at Purdue had a good year followed by a horrible bowl loss. The B10 West is sort of wide open, can the Boilermakers contend? Here in the B12, Texas Tech has a new coach who says they are going to play defense, will they? How about Mack Brown at UNC? He's doing his usual thing, UNC recruiting while not even close to what he did at Texas is going very well. Will this be one of those things where he'll actually get it back to being very good ACC program or will he wish he stayed at ESPN? Right now I don't see Clemson or Alabama letting up on the rest of us. Have you seen the # of 5 Star's that Clemson has for 2020? Ohio State has not missed a beat with recruiting either, so they should continue to be talentwise at least the best B10 team. There doesn't seem to be a dominant Pac12 squad right now, but wait till Urban comes out of retirement and takes the USC job!
USC has been great multiple times over multiple generations going back a very long time. Bill is right.
Absolutely USC and Nebraska should be front and center in this topic. In USC's case all it's going to take is an Urban Meyer type and they will come roaring back. In Nebraska's case they are like a Tennessee in that recruiting needs to come primarily from out of state and that's a tough obstacle to overcome sometimes unless you're Notre Dame.
Meyer had that star quality that few have ( see Swinney and Saban ). That quality that, all things being equal, this guy has an edge. I have always admired his in-game adjustments. The jury is out on Day.
What Bill brought it up, I certainly didn't. I don't think Meyer coaches again, but then I thought that when he retired from Florida.
Ok, I have my chain yanked and brought up something. Love having these conversations. Seriously I am making a resolve to be here more, I remember the old days fondly. Go Gators Gator Bill
I have missed you Bill. You simply have too many things to do in your retirement. Life is full of choices!
True Don. We are a lot busier in retirement that I thought we would be. Makes life interesting. We are in Michigan for a wedding right now and will head back to North Carolina tomorrow.
