It's getting down to the nitty gritty. The SI Heisman Predictor is as follows.. 1. Colin Klein KSU 2. Johnny Manziel A&M 3. Kenjon Barner UO 4. Manti Te'o ND 5. Marquise Lee USC I think it's basically Kleins to lose at this point. Irish fans are naturally behind Te'o who is a great player and an even better citizen, student, etc...but defensive only players just can't make it. It'll be a great honor for him to be in NYC though even though he won't win.
That's probably how it's going to end, barring a loss by KSU. I'd love for Johnny to win, but the voter bias against freshmen will continue.
My Ballot 1. Kenjon Barner UO 2. Colin Klein KSU 3. Johnny Manziel A&M 4. Manti Te'o ND 5. Marquise Lee USC 5a. Taylor Martinez (only because he's keeping things friggin' interesting)
That is a nice list and all are great players....that said, I wouldn't swap any of them for our kid Braxton.
Manziel is the most exciting multi-dimensional Qb I have seen in a while. Damned glad that the Gators don't play A&M next year.
Yeah he is very exciting no doubt, and it doesn't hurt that he's got a nick name of Johnny Football either. I think next year that starting out that he, Braxton Miller, Marcus Mariota and AJ McCarron of Alabama will be the top names pre-season.
I read that his family is applying to trademark the phrase, "Johnny Football." I don't know if that includes JFF.
According to this somebody not related to the Manziel family has already going forward to trademark the phrase.
JFF didn't hurt his chances with another big performance vs Missouri. Colin Klein probably would have to have the game of his life to get back to the top. Manti Te'o most likely to beat out JFF if anybody can. I was listening to Mad Dog on XM radio and he was making the case for Manti. I think Manti would be an awesome winner, he's a great person a great student and a great player. If he doesn't win he'll still be all those things. I think if Manti wins he'll maybe be the only Butkus/Lombardi/Heisman winner in history...quite a Trifecta if he were to pull it off. He will be in the College Football HOF someday.
This really shouldn't even be close. JM just broke Cam Newton's SEC yardage record... in TWO FEWER GAMES. And don't give me any of that "system" BS. He has over 1000 yard RUSHING. None of those chuck and duck QB's with huge numbers ever did that... and certainly not in this league. If he doesn't win it... the award is a joke.
Many a fan of the 2nd place finisher has utter those same words. But you will not hear them from me if Manti doesn't win, just that they should change the description to be best offensive player and drop the charade of considering defensive players.
Totally agree with you on that Terry. I thought AJ's boy N Suh would have won if a defensive guy ever would... Talk about DOMINANT...
If it's MOST OUTSTANDING ATHLETE I don't know how you DON'T give it to Manziel. Even Manti didn't break records, great person and player that he is. Manti anchors a very solid ND D, but without him ND still has a very good Defense. Without Manziel, A&M loses at least two more games this year.
Johnny Football in a landslide. And I am still ecstatic that the Gators got to play him in his first college game and won't see him again unless it's in the SEC Championship Game.
I won't argue that Manziel had a great season. Ty Detmer had incredible numbers for a QB the year he won, as did Andre Ware, and Geno Torretta, and a host of other incredible QB's. But I'm sorry if I can't agree that it's clear that Manziel is the most outstanding athlete. No where in there is there a requirement that the winner have record breaking stats.
No, it's not all about stats. I only brought up the records to illustrate what Johnny had accomplished vs previous winners... IN FEWER GAMES. If Tebow and Newton were good enough... why isn't Johnny?
Why isn't Manti? You are against freshmen being excluded but completely ok with defensive guys. I wonder where you would stand were JFF a QB at Texas and Manti Te'o a LB on a great Texas A&M defense that is going to the Nat'l Title game?
Geez Terry, You want what I really think? Fine, here it is. I've already had a Manti Te'o on my team, and his name was Dat Nguyen. Except... he was statistically BETTER than your guy (which I realize means NOTHING to you). I loved him... heart of the defense, great character, awesome team leader, but still humble. He won some great awards, but not a sniff on the Heisman front. We were ok with that. For whatever reason the Heisman folks are enamored with the offensive glitz, and had been forever. That's just how the voters have gone. Let me ask you this? If Johnny is a junior... are we even having a discussion right now???
Dat won plenty of awards, he was the Lombardi winner. He got tons of accolades, you make him seem like nobody bothered to notice him. He wasn't even considered for the Heisman, and of course as you know Ricky Williams won it because he set some all-time records. Other's getting votes that year included Donavan McNabb, Michael Bishop, Tim Couch...there was a great crop of offensive players that year. I have no problem with Manti not winning the Heisman as I have said several times, if JFF wins then good for him I'd rather we had a Jr or Sr who was deserving and Colin Klein was that guy but unlike JFF he's penalized for losing a game and not playing well. I'm just worried that you are going to be the next Dave if JFF doesn't win some how and the voters decide it's time a defensive player wins the award.
Terry's points are valid. According to the Heisman's own statement of purpose, it is not clear that Manziel is more deserving than Manti. I'm like Terry. If Manziel gets the award, so be it. He deserves it. But don't say that Manti doesn't. Show respect. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/r3G88FGJdMc" frameborder="0"></iframe>
