Looks like Tebow is a lock from what I have been reading and that's the way it should be based on what happened this year. Check out #4 in biggest Heisman mistakes from CFN: http://cfn.scout.com/2/598004.html
Interesting. Grossman not only lost out to Couch in the Heisman but also in the Walter Camp voting and the Davey O'Brian awards. Guess everyone but CFN didn't know what they were doing. I can't believe in the section about voting after the bowls that they chose to overlook the outstanding performance of Troy Smith last year. Very few QBs have ever had QB ratings lower than their shoe size (except for Grossman a couple of times last year.)
I could see the WC giving the "lifetime achievement" to Crouch but the O'Brien is for best Qb......Crouch was not....but he was a senior.
 Last year's balloting was the biggest landslide in the history of the award......as if waiting till after the bowls would have made a difference. In the bowl games Smith's nearest competitor went down at the hands of the Wisconsin Badgers, ran for 89 yards and was not even the leading rusher on his team in that loss.....hardly the stuff of Heisman lore. Perhaps DMac will bring home the trophy this year. If there were other players further down the list in the voting for the award whose distinguished play in the bowl game would have, by popular acclaim, vaulted them over Troy, I sure as hell don't know who it would be.....you Gip?
Somehow running for 89 yds is more impressive that going 4 of 14 for 35 yds., 0TDs and1 int. I guess losing one of his two first round draft choice receivers may have been partially to blame. After all, how many QBs out there could have been successful with only one? Then again, unlike other QBs he was under some pressure. Still, passing for an average of less than 9 yds. a quarter in the biggest game of his career is not very good.Certainly not "Outstanding" Perhaps one way to look at his impact is to see how his team is doing this year without him. So with Smith they won the BT, beat Mich. and were no. 1 going into the Championship game. Without out him they won the BT, beat Mich. and are no.1 going into the Championship game. He certainly was irreplacable wasn't he? The only difference is, OSU might be competitive in the Championship game.
IMHO, the events and results of last year and this year should have finally proven the "we don't give it to a sophomore or freshman 'cause they'll get it next year" is just a ridiculous philosophy.
I will say this. The Buckeyes QB this year looks a lot better than the Hesiman winner of last year to me.
You can't make any conclusions about wheter or not somebody deserved or didn't deserve a Heisman based on the Bowl games. I can think of a lot of Heisman winners who bombed in their bowl games and were flops as pro's. Our own Tim Brown had a less than stellar outing vs Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl, his biggest play was chasing down the Aggie who stole his towel. I think that BYU QB who won the Heisman over Rocket threw 5 picks in his bowl game. Eric Crouch got stuffed by Miami in that blowout NC game. It's a long list. Maybe the Heisman should go to the most outstanding player in the bowl game. :?:
I think the time we choose the Heisman right now is fine. So Troy Smith had a bad game in the bowl game, all good players have bad days. He was running for his life the whole game and that's not his fault, it's his lines fault. He deserved the award last season.
I can't really argue with any of those lists; and that is unusual because I can argue with ANYTHING. As a total Nebraska homer, I am deeply familiar with the play of Rozier, Frazier and Crouch but haven't seen much more than highlights on many other of the winners and non-winners. While I'll credit a great bowl performance, I could give a fig about what any of them did or did not do in the NFL. So I feel justified in claiming that Tommie Frazier was a greater QB than Eric Crouch; I don't think any Husker fan would much disagree. And I mean no disrespect to Crouch or Eddie George; they are both great players but it is tragic that Frazier didn't get the trophy. Crouch was terrific but not so much more so than Scott Frost and nobody seriously proposed Frosty for the trophy. I think Crouch got a little lucky, I was surprised that he won. Of course, Frost had a much better supporting cast. I heard that Tommie's mom in built a shelf at her home in Florida to hold the trophy long before the voting. I'm not usually superstitious but that is one thing I would NEVER advise doing. I don't there was any kind of bias or conspiracy against Frazier or NU. The voters were just wrong. Nice to see that acknowledged. ~Matt
NYC, I thought Crouch was the most exciting of the 3 Husker QB's that you mentioned. I really liked watching him play.
Crouch was a wonderful, wonderful quarterback in a season when the Nebraska D, through no fault of Crouch's, was starting to unravel. The first part of the 2001 season was the Huskers of old, the last two horrible games were a preview of the last six gagworthy seasons. I loved Frazier for his leadership and smoldering intensity. He is not a big man. Alas, he's been kind of an embarrassing failure as a coach. Crouch had wonderful wheels befitting his status as a high school track champion. A lot of people didn't like Frost for personal reasons, but he was unbelievably athletic, ever see that highlight of him knocking an A&M linebacker out of his socks in the 1997 BXII Championship? I was there. Never seen anything like it. None of the three did anything to write about in the NFL. Don't get me wrong, I still think Crouch was better on balance than Frost, but not Heisman material (but, hey, we'll take what we can get). Frazier is one of the best college football players of all time. ~Matt
...I got ya Gip. DMac's bowl game performance clinches the deal for him overcoming the greatest deficit in Heisman history. That would be the equivalent of Mondale overcoming Reagan's lead in the electoral college balloting based upon his relative superior performance in Guam even though both finished well behind the local write-in...... You Irish guys got some damn short memories......
i dont agree <t>we remember just fine.<br/> <br/> Everytime I saw you guys play, including the win in the Sugar Bowl vs us, I felt that Ohio State was an incredibly talented team with a better than average, mobile QB</t>
I seem to remember Brady Quinn having a "bad day" against Michigan (only completed 50% of his passes and threw for 3 TDs) and ESPN wrote him off for the Heisman IN SEPTEMBER.
Bill Livingston in the Cleveland Plain Dealer today; "Then again, Buckeye quarterback Todd Boeckman probably won't have gained 20 pounds while doing little but celebrate his Heisman Trophy at the In-N-Out Burger, which largely constituted Troy Smith's preparation for Florida."
