Seantel Henderson is a future NFL All-Pro of that everybody is certain. He will be a monster player in college, everybody wants him. Unfortuneately I just read an article that says he currently has not qualified to play in NCAA Div 1 football. He only has a 17 ACT and that combined with his GPA makes him ineligible. According to his father if he maintains a B average in the core courses his 2nd semester he can qualify. You have to wonder if a kid like that can 1) raise his ACT (legally) or 2) suddenly become a B student(without some grade fixing by teachers). I had heard that his parents really liked ND, but that he wanted to go to USC where he could be close to the music industry as he fancies himself as a rapper/OT. I had also heard that he was afraid of the academic load at ND, and given that he's barely a C student and with a 17 you have to wonder if he could make it at ND. He is going to commit someplace on Feb 3, the question is will the school that he commits to ever enroll him? Sad, that the kid didn't realize the importance of the academics a little earlier.
Supposedly his core GPA is 2.2 and combined with a 17 ACT he's not NCAA eligible. Sad to see a kid with so much talent in this situation.
What are you saying here Terry? It's all about doing the work in the classroom. If he just isn't doing it, then I feel no pity for him, he's doing it to himself. If he "can't" do it, then he has no business being in college anyway. As one of my professors told me once, "Well son, some of us just aren't cut out to be engineers". 8)
I didn't mean to imply that anybody else besides himself is the blame for his current predicament. But if he were equally as talented in baseball he would be a top pick in the draft and could sign a big bonus contract and go to the minor leagues to develope for eventually moving to the bigs. But in football he's got to go to college to develope. Somebody will sign him though, if he's not NCAA qualified it won't be ND, but somebody will take a chance that he can get it done by the time August rolls around.
He wants to go to college and play football and spend time on developing his music career. Who has time to study? Football and rap music, how has this kid not verbaled to Miami?
Actually he was hoping to be mentored by Snoop Dogg since they shut down the 7th floor rap group at Miami.
Gip, you are a bad man! Watch... he'll move to Louisiana and enroll in a prep school. His core and scores will quickly become rock solid, and he'll be at LSU next season. (Don't laugh... it's happened many times before.)
henderson <r>Interesting.....something tells me most schools will be better off without him. As far as ND is concerned even if he did get qualified, he will probably have a hard time staying eligible and sounds to me like his private lifestyle would soon end his days at ND if he did. <br/> <br/> How does the song go? pants on the ground, lookin like a fool, gold in your teeth etc...... <E>8)</E></r>
From what I gather his parents like ND, possibly for all the reasons that he might not want to go to ND. Reading between the lines they might figure that a place like ND will be good for him educationally presenting fewer distractions socially and more emphasis on going to class and graduation. Henderson himself probably likes the social scene at several other larger state schools and the promise of easier academics. The Irish are getting the last shot at the kid, Kelly will be his last in home visit before dead period. From a football standpoint he's a great catch for who ever gets him, and if it's ND and he meets the criteria for admission then many Irish fans are going to be happy. If he does come, I hope he's ready to do the classroom work and not end up transfering over academics. We have a history with players from his HS though and they have all been good kids, even though one (an OL) who transfered to Wisconsin didn't ever fit in Ryan Harris, Michael Floyd and a RB who escapes me all thrived at ND. Their HS is known for academics so that might help the young man get acclimated at ND. Who knows. He's a great football player though.
MCG, the act score is a sliding scale according to the GPA. In answer to the question can he raise his ACT score legally, I would think so. If he studies and raises his grades during the spring semester and also gets help studying for the ACT I believe he could pass. Unless he just has a low IQ. If not then a prep school could get him ready for next season. I differ on not having any feelings for him. I hope this wakes him up and he can become eligible then does the work in college. As for as schools being better off without him, unless there is some evidence that he is a trouble maker I don't see that as a fair statement. I hope he gets his act together in time to qualify for entering in the fall somewhere. I would be glad to have him at Florida, but mostly I hope he makes it somewhere.
Bill you are right with regards to that sliding scale ACT/GPA. I agree with you as far as hoping the kid succeeds, he doesn't seem to have any of the other issues that make a lot of us sour on him. Just doesn't have the academics right now. It's sort of odd that ND is still hanging in there with him, I can only remember one player in the last 10 years who we accepted a verbal from who wasn't already qualified. It was a kid named Aldo De La Garza an OL from New Braunsfels TX. He was in the same situation as Henderson needed a higher ACT to offset low GPA. But he never got there, had to sit out a year after HS taking community college courses and then was able to qualify for A&M and played and graduated (I think). Probably was a good kid and I'm glad he was able to play at A&M.
I was wrong, he will visit Miami this weekend...so the Hurricanes get the last shot at Seantrel Henderson.
Terry, I think there is a very good chance this kid qualifies. You can take courses on how to do better on the ACT/Sat and how to take tests. Unless we know that he has done that in the past I would be optimistic he can improve.
Terry, I realize I'm taking this statement out of context, but taken alone, it begs the question....Are you mellowing?
Oh, I agree with Terry that it's nice he got to go to A&M, but the fact that Terry said something nice about Texas' archrival caught my attention.
I've got too many Aggies in my family to be a "hater". They are a rival, I like to see them do good for the sake of the relatives!! Family peace is a wonderful thing!
