It's been smoldering for awhile now, at the end of the year the AD at Tech said he and Leach had been working on an extension and he wasn't worried about Leach interviewing for other jobs. He was a little miffed that Leach went to Seattle to interview for the UW job and didn't clear it with him first, but Leach's current contract doesn't require that and has a very low buyout. Since then things have gone down hill and Leach has rejected the whole extension saying he'll coach out the contract. Sticking point is a clause that gives Tech the right to fire him if he interviews for another job without the AD's permission and cause him to owe Tech money as a penalty. It seems like a really stupid situation. Leach while he's had a lot of success and certainly has played exciting football, has never made it to a BCS bowl and isn't really taken seriously by any of the major BCS schools as a coach candidate. So I don't get why the AD would be so hard on this point. Leach and Tech at Impasse
Rumor has it they are going to fire him this weekend. Seems like a suicide move, but hey... it is the Dirtmonkeys after all!
Since both sides say that all they want is Leach to notify of any interviews and Leach saying that it fine by him. I don't understand the difficulty of getting that in writing. Seems Texas Tech is shooting themselves in the foot to me.
He does have 2 years left on his contract so I would imagine that there would be money owed to Leach. This is a nutty move on the part of the Tech AD. The whole issue is that he added that clause to the contract that forces Leach to tell him or he has to pay 1.5 million to Tech. It's nuts to go to the wall over that. I can tell you that if they do fire Leach and they don't do as well over the next couple of years as they have under Leach the AD might as well retire. He won't be fired because he's a long time Tech guy. But it's still a stupid power struggle.
This is what Leach said. This is from a thread on the Scout open board for Texas Tech Leach Thread on Texas Tech Board
its like I am taking crazy pills when I read things like this. Who the hell are they going to get to run that? Francione?!
After reading the anti-Leach posts on that board, I understand why TT is not respected outside of Lubbock.
Sid... they aren't respected IN Lubbock either!! 8) They think they are now big-time, and will easily attract a better coach than ML. This kind of thinking is usually followed by "Put down the crack-pipe!"...
At lunch today, my good friend asked, after seeing what the TT AD calls a contract, who in his right mind would want to go to Lubbock as the head football coach?
