Most of the speculation in Longhorn land is on Garret Gilbert and the Longhorn offense. Until that day when Greg Davis and Mack decided that maybe they just needed to let Vince Young do what he does best, Texas was traditional Pro Set offense with the QB under center and punishing TB's like Priest Holmes, Ricky Williams and Cedric Benson. The advent of the VY read option pretty much eliminated the TB as a big threat, and that continued with Colt McCoy. He way the leading rusher for the team in his last 2 years. But Mack thinks the defenses have started to catch up with the Spread (great ND is going to the Spread) and that it's time to put Gilbert under center and put a TB behind him and start to pound the ball. Of course maybe the fact that Gilbert is raw and the 2 backups behind him have never taken a snap in college football and are raw true freshman who enrolled early (Connor Wood and Case McCoy) Tre Newton, yes that name should ring a bell his dad is Nate Newton, seems to have stepped forward. So we shall see, we have some other backs who have potential but so far haven't been able to stay healthy. Fozzy Whitaker is a Houston kid who was really a great HS back but has been nicked up a lot at UT. If he can get and stay healthy he can be a great back I believe. The real issue for Gilbert is that he has a talented but inexperienced WR crew, we all know that if the QB and WR aren't on the same page that balls get thrown to where a WR is supposed to be but isnt' and look like they are thrown directly to a DB. The WR corp has a lot of potential and has some serious speed. OL is good not great, and will have to retool it's blocking schemes. Mack has recruited a lot of OL and these guys are not a bunch of 2* players they are talented. Just have to show it. We open with Rice at Reliant in Houston and go home to face Wyoming so Gilbert and the offense will get some exhibitions to iron out the kinks. Although Andre Ware did predict Wyoming would pull the upset of the season and beat Texas in Austin. ...yeah right Andre. First big game is Texas Tech in Lubbock. New coach, new coordinators, liquored up crowd seething for blood...should be fun!!
