The rumors are certainly flying. I like the idea of Kiffin. I like Gruden too but I think that one is mostly wishful thinking plus I'm not sure how he translates to the college game.

I heard that one. It seems that you have the schools mixed up though. The way I heard it, your boy, Pelini, was going to ask him for some help orchestrating that offense at Nebraska.

One big advantage of hiring Kiffin, would be that he's available now and while I don't think he could actually do any recruiting he would be able to make contacts and start building a staff so that at the end of the season he would hit the ground running to start his recruiting push.

Usually coaches aren't hired till mid Dec and then it takes them awhile to get a staff together and recruiting suffers and the class is usually smaller and not the same quality. Mack Brown took the job at UT very quickly after the end of the season and he took key staff members (his top recruiters) with him immediately and started recruiting. He did not coach the bowl game for UNC that year. Result was he really filled two classes nicely, the one at UNC and a pretty decent class at Texas. But if he'd coached the bowl game and all that he'd have a mediocre class.

With Gruden he'll be in the same boat that Weis was in when he took the ND job, limited time to put together a staff, and no real background in college so no real connections to assistant coaches he had to rely on the opinion of others (although he denied it and said he always had a list of assistants for a college job just incase one came up). I'm sure that like we were with Weis, you guys would think his Pro background and Super Bowl ring will make a difference. Turns out it's helpful for sure but Weis took awhile before he got the hang of recruiting.

Is Fulmer finishing the season, or is there an interim coach?

He finished the season half way through the UCLA game. He is however staying with the team for the rest of this season "and the bowl game". Can you believe that was actually said? We have to win out to get to any bowl. We haven't put together back to back wins all season! ... much less back to back to back! :?
