As reported in another topic, Lane Kiffin is possibly the next coach at Tennessee. However, Mike Hamilton is denying this report.
Well the way that things have gone with coach searches at ND, they deny offering the job to anybody till somebody accepts. I would imagine that the tenor of meetings with candidates guages whether or not they would accept the job if offered. If not then no offer is made, if they say yes they would accept if an offer were made, then an offer is made. That way the AD can say that Coach X is the only person to whom we offered the job. Plus since Brian Kelly still has a game on Saturday, they have not been able to interview him and feel that they must interview him before they make the offer to either him or to Kiffin.
Hey, I'm not sure I believe that and have a conflicting report. At breakfast this morning there was a guy at the next table with a Tennessee cap on dressed in overalls. I asked him how he was doing and who was going to be the next coach. He calmly informed me it was either going to be him or Peyton Manning. I said, hey Peyton isn't retiring yet, he made a sly grin! I didn't get his name, but as close as we are here to Knoxville I have to believe this might by the guy!
No Tom, but funny you should ask. The guy said he thought he recognized me and I said I thought I might have seen him around also. A man at the next table, there with his wife who obviously knew the guy I had been talking to asked me, have you volunteered down at the jail? I said no, why? He said that was because that's where I might have seen the guy in the Tennessee hat! Strange happenings.
He's a pretty interesting choice. It also sounds like he may bring some good coaches with him from what I've read elsewhere.
ESPN and CBS Sportsline are both reporting a deal in principal has been reached. Here's the Sportsline link. Lane Kiffin
Tom, I'm just curious about who all you've been hearing about coming with Lane Kiffin to Tennessee. If half the rumors I've been hearing are true, then the rest of the SEC better get ready to hear a giant sucking sound. That sound will be an abundance of talented recruits being sucked to Knoxville. A sampling: Monte Kiffin as D-coord. This one seems to be legit as it's been reported by several sources. Ed Orgeron as Dline coach I don't know about this one. I hope it's true though because he's a great recruiter just not a great head man. Bill Callahan as O-Coord. Doubt this one and I actually hope it isn't true. Lane's brother-not sure of his name but he currently is a GA at Nebraska Reaves from South Carolina I hear he's a good recruiter and QB coach. We'll take him. Trooper Taylor back as O-Coord. I really hope this one is true but I don't think it holds weight. There are other names being tossed around too. I think Kiffin is going to do a good job. I'm excited again about the future of Tennessee football. Imagine Eric Berry patrolling the middle in that Tampa 2 D.
Aquila, I've been out of the loop on this one. You have heard much more than I. I will say that Lanes father and Trooper would be excellent choices. I wanted Trooper as OC before he left.
I love optimism Aquila, but I have faith the Gators will continue getting plenty of the recruits they want. A revival of the Gator - Vol rivalry would be welcome though.
Uh Oh...Kiffin already called on recruiting violations by Spurrier and ala Jim Tressel he promised a Tenn victory over Fla next year!! Sounds like things will be interesting in Knoxville!! Spurrier Calls Out Kiffin
