Our annual member-guest tournament.....team best ball match play event. Three days, 5 9-hole matches - round robin within 6 man flights. All flight winners compete in 3 hole shootout......have played with my bro-in-law last 7 years. We won our flight a few years back, but crashed and burned in the shootout....always great fun. Shoot out format - probably similar to several you've seen - every team on the tee box playing alternate shot. Half eliminated on hole one, the remainder - except the two finalists - on hole two....two final teams go head to head on the last hole. Family, friends, vanquished teams and the obligatory beer cart - take to the course to follow the action. Probably a couple hundred spectators pretty much a carnival atmosphere.....great fun. Final hole highlights.....400 yard par 4 into the wind - green protected 3/4 by surrounding lake - pin back left. Partner shockingly finds the fairway off the tee in spite of pi$$ing down his leg.....same with the other guys. They are away....approach shot flys the pond, hits the bank, amazingly stays out of the hazard. DAMN....my shot. The kid is looking at a real golf shot..... 180 into at least a one club wind over the lake to a tucked pin. Betting odds favor a hosel rocket OB, followed closely by a chunk into the lake....other bettors favor the layup - intentional or not - or the safe right side of the green....few takers on the shot at the flag. Chugged the remainder of my beer - at least my third since the shootout began, one more big tug on the stogie......leading the O-H-I-O cheers echoing from the crowd, trying to remind myself that hyperventilating does not generally lead to sound swing mechanics........BAM! - 4 Iron missile to 5 feet. The crowd erupts......game over! Odds on betting say I was aiming way right, and pulled it badly and the pin got in the way......I'll never tell!
Lol...I know that sequence well!! Sounds like a good time was had by all! Congrats on the Tiger like shot to nail it! Did you back up that 4 iron?
AKA FYB..... or screw your buddy for the well-mannered in the group. I didn't tell the story of how I short-sided him into the 8 foot deep greenside bunker a foot from the back lip on the first hole....oops! Sorry buddy! He somehow manages to get the ball up top to the bermuda rough just off the fringe. He ends up having to make a sliding left to right 6 footer downhill for bogey to get us into a chip off....we win and advance to hole #2.....
No doubt you made the putt!!! Here's a satelite video of you making that putt. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nLJG-6BDtD4&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nLJG-6BDtD4&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Stu, only the shoot out portion was alternate shot....the match play was best ball. I took several holes off during the event - BIPSIC. Ball In Pocket Sulking In Cart! Husker, I often hit better shots blind with my eyes closed.....no surprise there!
It is that time of year again....Team Buckeye prepares to defend the title. The weather is a mess, I'm hittin' it crooked, the bermuda rough is up to my sack and on the greens I can't find find the hole with a gps nav system.....I'm optimistic, we've got a shot!
Good luck, keep your head down, don't sway on your back swing, and follow through down the target line...assuming you've lined yourself up correctly! other than that it's a piece of cake!!
Thanks TOK....in truth I've got a much better shot at winning the poker tournament held annually the nite of the stag party the evening prior to the tourney.....you don't get penalized for lyin'! 8)
Thanks Bill, the pic and trophies were from last year....this year's event begins tomorrow just as we have the rain from a tropical storm in the area. Got 10 inches Monday, expecting as much today! Actually, one of my good buddies is a Gator playing in the event.....he and his Penn State partner make for a good time for all.
