A lot of rumors at this point, but nothing official from the university, other than they are looking into the situation.
re: Tattoogate 8) I liked Terrelle Pryor's statement: "I paid for my own tattoos." Who paid for Cam Newton's? His daddy or Mississippi State?
After doing some more reading and searching, it appears there may be some secondary violations. I doubt anyone will miss the Sugar Bowl, but some type of penalties will be handed down. I look for some type of official announcment today from the Ohio State University. The media will blow this up as big time news.
Still too many web-fueled rumors to sort anything out....expecting an official announcement today sometime. In other news, Cam Newton's Dad has asked for $180,000 to assist in discussions with the NCAA.....our AD has countered with an offer for a free tat. Newton has decided to keep his act down south.....
I just don't understand the fascination of athletes with tattoos. I mean I could maybe understand one modest size...but so many of these guys just cover their bodies with this crap. I don't get it.
Below is information provided by Tim May, Dispatch sports writer, which provides some input as to how this all came about. "The probe apparently was the offshoot of another investigation by law-enforcement agencies of possible unlawful behavior by the parlor owner, sources said. During a search for evidence, a stash of memorabilia signed by some current and former Ohio State players was found, the sources said, and law-enforcement officials made school administrators aware of it. NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes from using their status to receive a benefit not available to the general public."
Spent 22 Years in the Corps and never got one. If I would have, I would have gotten one that meant something deeply to me....say like the American Flag over my Heart.....The Eagle, Globe and Anchor on my forearm......Big Red "N" on my forehead.....MOM on my shoulder.....or the one my wife wanted me to get on my butt cheek...."Who's Your Momma"
I spent 2 years in the Navy, and I never got one either. I don't think I even saw a tattoo parlor in San Diego. I think I would have gone with something like this on my right forearm.
Here is the outcome: Five OSU players, including Pryor, suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season
Yikes! That looks like a real page and all but what the heck did they get for those tattoos to deserve 5 games? That seems very harsh, unless of course they are now all driving a lexus or something like that.
Well it's up on ESPN as well. What a blow to the Buckeyes for next year. Do they even have a competent back up QB for Pryor to play the first 5 games. And why are they being allowed to play in the Bowl game? 5 Buckeyes Suspended
Ugh......just ugh. The kids sold various awards they had received, e.g., conference championship rings, "gold pants" they get for beating the stripeheads, bowl sportmanship awards, etc......I guess they are given to you, you have earned them, they are yours, but you're not allowed to sell them.....when they receive a watch or an X-box from the bowl committees as gifts as all teams do, are they not allowed to sell those if they desire? Clearly there was some uncertainty or education shortfall in our compliance efforts. We will take our medicine, learn from this, make the necessary adjustments and go forward....as we always have, as we always will.....
I believe Georgia had a similar problem with this a while back. I wonder if the penalties are similar. At least the Buckeyes get their full complement of players to try and end that SEC hex in the Sugar Bowl.
I have mixed feelings, on the one hand it would seem that if somebody or organization gives you a gift that you should be able to do with it what you want, keep it, throw it away, sell it, whatever. But on the other hand when we are talking NCAA football players (or other sports) I could see this quickly getting out of hand with boosters buying stuff from kids way over market value as an end run around the rules regarding boosters giving money to players. I wonder if some of those players will just go pro now rather than come back for slightly more than 1/2 season.
I'm with ya on both counts TOK.....the logic would suggest then that the kids can't sell ANYTHING...no matter when, where nor whom they received it from without having some validation that they received no more than fair market value which as we all know is subject to gray area of interpretation as well.....the burden we place on these kids is immense, as are the benefits they receive as stars on a high-visibilty team. I don't know what the answer is.....what is also troubling to many is the NCAA response compared to the Newton situation.... The kids were apparently unaware that they could not sell the items in question, but once the AJ Green situation came to light, the staff held a compliance update with the kids and they did not come forward at that time and hence an extra game was added to the penalty. Of the key kids suspended, Pryor was coming back for certain, Herron, Posey and Adams were uncertain and it was likely we would have lost at least one of the three....now who knows.
