Tennessee has the top spot in the SEC East. Florida is playing South Carolina tonight at 7pm Eastern. With a win, Florida is one game behind the Vols. With a loss, which would be an absolute shocker, they would fall to 6-3. That would leave Florida having to hope for Tennessee to lose to another SEC school to force a tie if the Gators beat Tennessee in Gainsville. The pressure is on Gators!
Here are the remaining schedules for both schools with my thoughts on wins/losses/toss ups: Tennessee remaining schedule: Feb 11 @Georgia Win Feb 15 Auburn Win Feb 18 @Alabama Win Feb 22 @Florida Toss up Feb 25 Arkansas Win Mar 1 Kentucky Win Mar 4 @Vanderbilt Win Florida remaining schedule: Feb 8 South Carolina Win Feb 11 LSU Loss Feb 15 @Vanderbilt Win Feb 18 @Arkansas Win Feb 22 Tennessee Toss up Feb 26 @Alabama Win Mar 1 Georgia Win Mar 5 @Kentucky Win If this plays out like I think, Tennessee wins the SEC East regardless of the rematch in Gainesville.
I could see UF with two more losses but I don't think it's LSU or Tenn. I think Tenn could lose on the road to Bama and possibly to a UK rematch if the Cats NCAA lives depend on it. Couple that with what I think will be a loss to Florida and I see the teams tied up.
This is where I think the B12 does it right with the basketball schedule. We do have a regular season conference champion, we don't play divisions at all in basketball or baseball/softball. The schedule is based on what football division you are in, so Texas plays home/home with all the B12 South, but with the B12 North teams you play home/home in alternate years. So in the end you have 1 conf champion not 2 division winners. I like that a lot more. Terry
You know, Florida Basketball is starting to run the course of Tennessee Football... no AS bad of course, but somewhat the same. They started out with high expectations. They had some impressive wins. Then something happened. They started losing games they shouldn't have. I can say with all honesty that I hope, for the Gators here, that this trend ends... AFTER the Tennessee game of course! I know how it feels to go through a pittiful season and I don't wish that on anyone.
Tennessee Tom, These things seem to run in cycles and and hardly anyone is exempt, except Duke in basketball. (At least it seems that way to me)
The sustained excellence of Duke in basketball over the career of Coach K is truly amazing. He of course is a great coach, and he is a great recruiter. And for the most part Duke players stay at least 3 years, he did have several jump earlier for the NBA a few years ago, but for the most part he doesn't have to deal with that. That continuity of the talent is one of his secrets to success. I remember reading that after those kids jumped to the NBA, unexpectedly from his standpoing (Elton Brand was one that comes to mind). He sort of changed his recruiting and made sure that he not only got top players but also players who were willing to commit to 3 years or 4. For example he would have never recruited Carmelo Anthony. The other amazing thing is that he gets top talent and he doesn't really have a record of producing a lot of NBA legends to be. A lot of his best players have been just regular NBA players, can't really think of any bonafide superstars other than Grant Hill (before the injury). Terry
Another barn burner going on in the SEC. Florida and LSU are tied at 37 at halftime. I can't get the game here without going pay per view so CBS Sportsline game center is as best as I can do. We don't play LSU again so I am pulling for a Florida win. That would leave Tennessee with the best SEC record, not just SEC East.
Florida beats LSU to move Tennessee out of a tie for the top SEC spot. Now on to Tennessee vs. Georgia that starts at 4pm Eastern. A Tennessee loss will not affect the order of the SEC East but will drop us back into a two way tie with LSU for the overall SEC race.
Tennessee starts off sound asleep in this game at Georgia. Georgia had a double digit lead before Tennessee scored 10 points. Tennessee woke up about half way through the 1st half. It is now 27 to 25 with Tennessee in the lead with 3:30 left in the 1st half. 8)
Tennessee woke up was an understatement! Tennessee goes on a 11 to 4 run in the last 3 minutes to lead Georgia 38 to 29 at the half.
Tennessee up by 18 at one point has again fallen asleep. Tennessee still leads by 5 points. Georgia looks like they could easily win this one with 7 minutes lift in the game.
Tennessee was in danger until Georgia had to start fouling us. Tennessee wins a close on by a score of 83 to 78. Tennessee retains the top overall spot in the SEC and should be considered in the top 10.
As I expected, Tennessee broke into the top 10 with last weeks wins. The AP has us at #8 and the Coaches poll has us at #10. This means that we will probably have a let down this week. Tennessee hasn't been this high in the polls in a very long time.
The top four in the SEC all played last night and all won their games. Therefore, no change in the SEC race. 1) Tennessee 2) LSU 3) Florida 4) Alabama
