Manny Diaz a young fast rising DCoord from Miss State, who is a Cuban from Miami, his dad was a former Mayor of Miami. Which means that Gonzo most likely knows him personally. He's a FSU grad. Coached at FSU, NC State, Mid Tenn, and MSU now Texas. Fast rising coach. Should be perfect fit for the Longhorns. He'll have a lot of talent to work with and he's a dynamic recruiter who will bring even more talent to the Longhorns.

Then a hire that should impress both JO'Co and Corey as they are big fans of the way Boise State does things. It's Byron Harsin the OCoord at BSU, another young guy, but one who has been brought up in the BSU system and most Longhorns hope he brings that BSU style of offense to Texas. He's going to be the Co-Coordinator with Major Applewhite and the play caller. I'm guessing that elevating Major to Co-Coordinator was a reward for 1) not going with Muschamp to Fla 2) working his butt off during this period to keep the top rated class that the Longhorns have going together and last but not least a way to get Major a salary boost. Co-Coordinators can work well, Stoops has had Co-Coordinators for a long time on Defense with Brent Venables, starting with his brother Mike Stoops and a number of guys since then. They have also had Co-Coordinators on offense a couple of times in recent years.

Mack really has a young staff now, it should re-energize the program. I think that the BSU offense will fit Garrett Gilbert very well and the other 2 guys already on campus in highly rated Connor Wood and legacy Case McCoy. Spring Ball should be fun for these guys. Not to mention that we have a stud running back in Malcolm Brown coming this class. If he's all that he was in HS, he could be the starter next year and he has size and speed.

Mack is an outstanding coach, but I'm still concerned about this co-coordinator business. Hopefully the plan is for Major Applewhite to take notes while Harsin runs it...

How old is Mack Brown? (60) I really do not see him leaving Texas until he retires. Any feelings Terry on how long that might be? Future of Texas looks very promising.

I think Applewhite needs to take notes. He has a very promising future but he is young and needs to see a few more things before taking on this level of responsibility....again. :!:

Mack has evolved into the ultimate CEO coach, like JoePa and Bobby Bowden. There were several times this year where reporters would ask questions about why certain players were or were not playing, why certain calls were made, etc. In almost every instance he deferred to his Coordinators and at least one time he commented that he does not have the time to coach that level of detail, that administration and recruiting take up so much of his time etc.

I have heard from a number of sources that Mack expected an excellent team this year, and had told close firends that this might be the year for him to go out. Supposedly he certainly left Will Muschamp with that feeling, and when things went wrong and he clearly wasn't going to leave with a bad season, Muschamp jumped at the UF offer rather than try to wait out Mack. If Mack had left, Muschamp would have never even taken Foley's call. He liked it in Austin.

As for Major, I have no doubt that Major being elevated was to keep him from leaving, and give him a pay raise. He clearly will be the jr partner in the relationship, with Harsin calling plays and coaching QB's and Major helping with the game plan and coaching RB's. Harsin if he does well at Texas probably will be a short termer, he will leverage the BSU success and (hoped for) Texas success into a head coaching job as quickly as he can. Major then can take over as OCoord, having learned the BSU system from Harsin.

Forgot to mention that Texas lured the Vols Strength and Conditioning coach to Austin.

    Terry,

The staff that Texas is bringing in looks to be first class and one that I would love to have at Miami...I wonder now with Boise coaches getting plucked away to other schools if they can continue their success? We all know if you win "they will come"!!! And steal away the reason your winning...Its part of the cycle of college football...
