    Stating that he was embarassed by the rejection of 2 of his recruits who were qualified under NCAA standards. I don't really blame him if he was lead to believe that these kids were in at SC and then they changed their minds and decided they were not qualified.

    Now it seems to me that the admissions people need to be more up front with the coaches, like they are at ND and other places. Merely being qualified by NCAA standards is not enough, each school should decide for itself wheter they have additional standards and the coaches should be aware of it and the deficienies that kids on the edge have to make up before they can gain admission.

    We had a kid a few years ago, Aldo Del La Garza, who Davie recruited and was qaulifed but ND told both he and Davie he couldn't come unless he got his test score up and got another core course I believe. He even laid out a year after HS trying to get the score up but never could and enrolled at A&M. But it was clear up front that he wasn't in and that he what he had to do to get in.

    I believe that Spurrier worked under a similar system when he was at Fla and I'm sure there are lots of other schools who have standards that are higher than the NCAA's.

    Terry, I saw this article and meant to post it but we have company and I didn't get to it.

    But you usually manage to find the interesting stuff! :lol: :lol:

    About the article, apparently the players are NCAA qualified but when they went to enter this summer were rejected by Admissions.

    While Spurrier's threat to quit is probably off the wall I sure do understand his point about how he needs to have credibility where it comes to talking to recruits and whether they will be admitted.

    I have not been able to find out why they were not admitted.

    ND 77, Gators are glad you have Coach Weis also because it means we have Meyer. And Meyer didn't go to Notre Dame because he thought the Gator job was better.

    And I imagine that at Notre Dame it would be clear to the coach, Weis, Meyer, Spurrier or anyone else, just what the requirements are for admission. That was Spurrier's complaint that it wasn't clear to him.

    Frankly I think he has a valid complaint. Whether you like how he handled it or not.

    LOL, I like U M as he's not befuddled by the consumption of cheeseburgers. Instead, he seems to know how to win when he shouldn't.

    well hold on there lil doggie

    <t>Coach Meyer has, and I am sure this is quite intentional, NEVER been in a position in which he should not win.. I'm not knocking the guy but his entire career has been one carefully crafted move after another. Remember, he took the UF job over the ND job because it was easier to win at one than it was the other.<br/>
    <br/>
    And if you folks at Florida think he shouldn't have been winning right out of the gate, then you're selling yourselves short. Let's see what Urbie has to do in the long haul, and lets see him MAINTAIN something for once in his career.<br/>
    <br/>
    You see, a few of us around here have been following Coach Meyer since he was the WR and special teams coach for the Irish (and following his career fondly mind you)..He is calculating and smooth. His timing is fantastic and he knows what a winner is, and how to get there. The one thing this guy has never proven is if he can STAY there.<br/>
    <br/>
    I've yet to see Urbie in a situation in which he SHOULDN'T win...</t>

    Corey, I generally agree with your thoughts. However just a couple of my thoughts.
    No big disagreement here, we expected him to win from day one, however not many of us expected a BCS Championship last season.

    I hardly think the for once in his career is quite fair. What should he have done, Stay at Bowling Green instead of going to Utah? Stay at Utah instead of going to Florida? I don't think so. Now he's found the place he's going to stay we will see what he can do in the long run. I predict success.

    Well I won't deny that was probably a factor. However it is way to simplistic to pass it off as the only reason. You see the Gators have a lot to offer also and were going after him hot and heavy when Notre Dame abruptly fired Willingham so they could go after Meyer because they were so sure he would go to Notre Dame. But they got a big shock.

    Agree with calculating, smooth, timing and knowing what a winner is and how to get there.

    See above as to staying somewhere.

    And I might add that if Notre Dame had been successful in landing Meyer I don't think the thought about proving he can stay there would have been an issue.
    I sure believe this statement and have to say that the timing of the Gator vacancy and our new president having been instrumental in hiring Meyer at Utah sure worked in our favor and we are very lucky to have him.

    And lastly I believe that for Florida and Notre Dame it was win - win, you got a fantastic coach in Charlie Weis and I don't think he was on a lot of radar's to be a college football coach.

    For all the above I think at some point it would be a fantastic draw for Florida and Notre Dame to play, I'm hoping that happens.

    Nice to see you posting guy.

    Let's set the record straight here. That's not how and why it happened. TW was fired because he could not win, NOT so ND could go after UM. UM was first on the list, but he was not the reason ND fired TW. To call it "shock" is a gross overstatement. Disappointment would be more appropriate. ND had a list of candidates in place. Of course, they were disppointed when their #1 candidate did not accept the job. But they quickly moved on.

    I don't disagree with Bill very much. I don't think Willingham was fired so that we could go after Urban Meyer, but I do think that when Willingham was fired he was #1 on the list. UM was the hottest coach to come on the national scene in a long time and it was rumored that he had a clause in his contract for an out if the ND job came open. So it was natural that we went after him right away. Of course nobody knew that UM secretly already had a deal with the Gators.

    In the end I think Urban would have done a great job as the coach at Notre Dame, he's a hard worker a great recruiter and obviously a coach who knows how to win. I don't think he could have done any better than Charlie though as Zook left him a lot of talent on both sides of the ball and Charlie only got some good offensive talent. Plus I don't think the ND talent esp Quinn would have fit Urbans offense as well as it fit Charlies offense, but just like he did with the Gators he'd have figured out a way to get it all together.

    You and I are saying the same thing, Terry, just in different "tones". Yours is more conversational and mine is more defensive. Also, like you I don't disagree with Bill except on that one point.

    I also agree that UM is a great coach. He's proven that. I have no bone to pick with him.

    With regard to Urban's winning ability on his own I guess we will have to see how his last two top 2 ranked recruiting classes do and if those rankings mean anything.

    I believe with a coach like Urban having top notch talent on hand is a killer. :wink: 8)

    Actually ... some 2 years ago .... there were quite a few folks who claimed Meyer wouldn't win, stating that "his offense would not work" in the rugged (fast and physical) SEC. Further, I seem to recall that just a little more than 7 months ago, a majority of college football fans believed he couldn't win against a much more talented team from OSU. Shoot, many said Meyer and his UF team didn't belong, weren't good enough to be in that BCS championship game.<br/>
    <br/>
    Now Corey, maybe you knew all along that he would win the SEC and MNC in 2006 but I'm not sure many others believed he'd go 13-1 against one of the most difficult schedules in D1 and be just a few plays away from a perfect 14-0.</r>

    no no no

    <t>you're putting words in my mouth. i said he'd win and i knew he would. the MNC and all that, its a crap shoot. it really is.<br/>
    <br/>
    those saying his offense wouldn't work and garbage like that are the 'SEC uber alles' types that are now humbled by the Gators title.</t>

    "be just a few plays away from a perfect 14-0."

    Those few plays Gaterz that were the creation of a homer SEC ref at Auburn may have been the catalyst that saw Florida to the national title.

    If UF was 13-0 heading into the game with Ohio State the Gators would have had the full attention of the Buckeyes and the media.

    As it were UF was flawed...had that one loss and it was a great help in the end.

    Sid, I don't want to get cross ways with you but it did appear that Notre Dame fired Willingham quicker than they normally would have when it became obvious that Florida was hot after Meyer.

    But I do believe the basic reason Willingham was fired was what you put forth. And I will also admit to you that I think that Zook was fired early for much the same reason, so Florida could pursue Meyer.

    I don't want to make a big deal out of this.
