Reports are that it is an immediate retirement. http://www.garnetandblackattack.com/south-carolina-gamecocks-football/2015/10/12/9515937/steve-spurrier-retirement-south-carolina-gamecocks-football
Always best to retire on one's terms and not wait too late. I wish him and his wife well in his retirement.
I'm curious as to why now in the middle of the season. Story breaking at 9 PM on a Monday night. Health or disagreement with the school? :?:
Could not stand the thought of another probable loss to Tennessee! 8) I for one will not miss his mouth!
I suspect the AD might have said something about how can we get this thing turned around and ol Steve just stood up.... hitched his britches and uttered "maybe it's time for somebody else to give it a shot"..... etc.
I've always loved and hated Spurrier. He was really a unique guy, his famous quips were hilarious if you weren't the targets. But I've also hated him because I think he's many times voted the Irish ridiculously in the polls. There are numerous times that we were ranked in the top 10 virtually by everybody voting, except him who would rank us #24 or something like that. I feel bad for the players though, unlike Sark who has an addiction problem that prevents him from coaching, Spurrier is quiting because he can't take the losing, he can't take that his players that he recruited aren't good enough to win. So so long boy's I can't stand ya'lls losing. How about showing your players you believe in them by doubling down and working and coaching them harder. Really working on developing them. Sad way to end it IMHO.
I suspect health may have something to do with it. Anyone who has seen SS limping around lately can tell it's not because he wants to walk like John Wayne...
First of all, hi from France. Second, I'll have a third in another topic, but along the lines of what Terry said about loving him and hating him here's an article from a Tennessee fan that I think mirrors a lot of peoples thoughts about the Ole Ball Coach. God Bless Steve Spurrier
My first thought was that maybe now the Coach's poll will be more reflective of teams accomplishments rather than an individual's bias. My second thought was that I couldn't care less when he walks out on his team.
Pretty clever quip gipper I have to give you that. However if you read about his press conference and what was stated I hardly think he can be accused of walking out. Clever quip though.
I will say this, I do wish Mack Brown had the same coaching world view as Spurrier. As things wound down in the 2013 season it was very clear Mack needed to retire, but he was too damn stubborn or money hungry or something. He hung on to the bitter end and then fought to keep the job. If he'd just said at the end of the season that he was going to coach the bowl game and retire, that would have been fine. Instead it became a freak show.
Yes Terry I remember. With Spurrier I never expected him to coach this long. Another article I read about Spurrier resigning had comments from him about recruiting and how he felt he was hurting the Gamecocks in that area right now. I got the feeling from that article that the school was behind him in that area and it was best to leave now. At the present time he holds the record for wins at two school, Florida and S. Carolina. If I find that article again I will post it.
That's the wonderful part about life in the good Old USA isn't it gipper, we can pick and choose what we want to do and I support your choice, for you, to the maximum. For others who might want to read here's another article where the writer does call Spurrier a quitter. Interesting that 99% of the article is complimentary to the last sentence.
