Mack Brown is down at 39, that's way too low for a guy who's never had a losing season at Texas, and who has averaged more about 10 wins a season, has a Nat'l Championship ring and played in another NC. Sure last few years have been lean by Texas standards..but there aren't 39 guys better than him.

Bill Synder is also too low, he's one of the top 5 coaches IMHO.

Brian Kelly is too high, he had a great year last year no doubt, but that doesn't make him one of the top 5 coaches.

Pat Fitzgerald is too high, good coach, hard worker and all and not at a place where winning big is a tradition. But not one of the top 10 coaches.

    1. Nick Saban...has the rings to prove it. Proably what drove Urban Meyer from the SEC. He could see the train coming down the track.

    2. Urban Meyer...guy has multiple rings so you have to put him high

    3. Chris Petersen ... no doubt one of the best

    4. Bob Stoops...over rated...good coach no doubt, but Big Game Bob hasn't been coaching like Big Game Bob for the last 5 years.

    5. Brian Kelly.

    6. Steve Spurrier...should be ranked over Kelly and Stoops.

    7. David Shaw... I thought he might flounder without Luck but Stanford was great last year, looked very well coached. I think his guy should be ahead of Stoops and Kelly as well. Doesn't have much personality though.

    8. Pat Fitzgerald...not a top 10 coach IMHO

    9. Les Miles...I have to admit for all of his goofy decisions he had good teams at Ok State as well where he didn't have the talent that he has at LSU.

    10. Gary Patterson. Excellent coach..deserves to be in the top 10. Had a good team last year in a tough situation with his QB being a druggie/alky and lost a ton of talent from the year before. We'll see how he does the next few years in the B12.

Actually, I would put Kelly ahead of Stoops and Spurrier ahead of both, putting Spurrier at 4, Kelly at 5 and Stoops at 6. If you look at Kelly's entire body of work over his career, what he's done at ND is consistent with what he's done everywhere else. He brings programs up to an elite level within their environments. That's what he's done at ND. I don't see us going backward.

It's only opinion and certainly subject to debate.

I would exchange Stoops for Shaw.

Also agree on Spurrier....what he has done at SC has been remarkable.

A great coach... Lou Holtz....had some success but Spurrier has taken the Cocks a step higher with the consistency he has been able to achieve there ( ass beatin from Florida last year notwithstanding )..... :D

    The list is pretty reasonable.

I will predict though that Muschamp will move up in future lists.

Bill I'm surprised at how low Muschamp is as well as how low Brady Hoke is as well.

Maybe if this is the "Big Game Choke" list... In that case he is under rated!

I don't really have an issue with Fitz in the top 10. He's winning and playing big boy football at Northwestern!! Not only that, he's doing it annually. He inherited the Randy Walker fiasco and righted the ship. He isn't the most orthodox guy, but he doesn't really care what anyone thinks either. I think he'd be no lower than 12th on any list, but he's right up there with the best and he's a young guy.

Meant to say in my other post that I agreed with George on Kelly.

Last year ND met a complete buzzsaw when they played Bama but at least the Irish were able to do what was necessary to get the chance for that beatin. Credit Kelly for knowing how to win championships.

NC could have won the NC last year.....if Baylor hadn't beaten KSU. :(

I've been unimpressed by Kelly until last year.. and even that ended with an underwhelming experience. Still, he does show signs of hope and positive momentum..especially in recruiting. I don't know about all this transfer business, but that's also going to happen when you start taking caliber instead of character.

We'll see.. ranking works in progress is always a futile practice.
