I think I like this; http://www.federalnewsradio.com/494/2868334/NASA-takes-one-giant-leap-into-commerical-space-flight Makes me think of comparing USPS to FedEx and UPS.
I like it too. It was never realistic to think that the federal government would hold a permanent monopoly on space travel. Sooner or later, all technological genies escape from the bottle and I was never convinced that the feds had any right to make space law in the first place. Lewis and Clark were soldiers who explored the Louisiana Territory for the government, but it was the private citizens and companies which came after that settled the West. The same will happen in outer space...IMHO.
As soon as someone finds gold on Mars, we'll be all over the Red Planet. More than any other event, the Sutter's Mill discovery led to the great westward migration in this country.
Well there are valuable minerals on asteroids and a private company has plans to go after them in the near future.
This will be a good lesson in the ability of private enterprise to do thing better and less expensively than the federal government.
