And this bastid decides to take a Kamikaze stroll into my lane....Ruined my morning Zen, made one hell of a thump, and now it's time to take the truck to the shop on Monday to see what the exact damage is. Luckily this is not my first suicidal hog and I purchased quality push bars for all the trucks or I would have walked to work spitting out airbag dust all morning....

Bastids I really hate them.... :x

    Ralph,

That was your subconscious SEC dislike coming into play. You didn't see a Hog....you saw a Razorback.

AJ you discovered my hidden contempt for the SEC and since there were no Gators crossing the road why not have a pork basket Sandwhich....

Okay I'm fast becoming an old fart (hit 50 last year), the only critters I have not been able to mark on my list are a Florida panther, black bear, and Bigfoot. Everything else has met its death while I have been holding the steering wheel. Which by the way is 50,000 miles per year since 1984....

Holy sheep dip! You been makin' bacon all the time! I thought I had crazy stories about driving to work, but this is historic! This must qualify for the Road Kill Hall of Fame. There is nothing like that thing out here.

    Ralphie,

Last year my wife and I were driving on A1A in Hobe Sound, between Jupiter and Stuart where we have a second home. I should note it was around noon and very clear. About 75 yards in front of us an animal came streaking across the road from right to left. It was definetly feline and large. When it passed behind the car in front of us I could see a long tail , much longer than any kind of bobcat. It had a long stride, crossing the road in two easy strides disappearing into brush surrounding a golf course I would say it was medium to dark brown. I'm convinced we were looking at a panther. And we are only 1/4 mile from the intercoastal and less than a mile from the ocean.

Another time we were driving down Federal Hwy in Stuart when my wife let out a scream and jumped in my lap. It's been a few years and a couple of kids since she did that so I pulled the car off the road in a flash and pulled her out the driver side with me. On the dashboard all curled up was what looked like a coral snake. I started tapping on the glass and the snake slowly started unwinding and heading for the floor. I let him stretch to almost his full length and grabbed his tail and whipped him out of the car in one motion. On further review I think it was a corn or rat snake.

You ever see those bofu toads running all over?

    Tell ya what Ralph.
You buy me an nite vision ACOG for my AR and I'll ride in the bed watching over the cab.
    Problem solved.
    8)

I've never crossed paths with a hog on the road here.
Considering they outnumber people many times over that seems kinda odd.
    (Knock on wood!)

Wow, that is one scary looking critter!!

If this accident happened in Milwaukee, the Mexican restuarants near the accident would have a nice special on wild boar enchiladas the next day.

It does sound as if you were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a panther, a very small percentage can truly say that. It's been thirty years since I caught my one and only glimpse. Did it look like this?

This is a friends house east of Ft.Myers who caught this on a game camera a month ago. The males have a 150 mile range where the females are half the range. There has never been a documented female Panther north of the caloosahatchee river. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caloosahatchee_River
The introduction of western cats to prevent inbreeding has changed the hunting pattern from night to day time, making a more aggressive cat. Rancher friends are experiencing more calf loss from Panthers and it was recently announced that one mile south of our farm they are going to be introduced on the Babcock ranch preserve http://m.myfwc.com/viewing/recreation/wmas/cooperative/babcock-ranch-preserve
So I expect to have an encounter or two...

I laughed my ass off at your rat snake story, they have the knack to drop down and scare the crap out of you. My foreman was reaching into our bolt bin at the shop and found one curled up in the back...And yes Bufo toads are big and ugly, a few months ago I flpped out at one in our front yard because it was the size of a Chihuahua 4-5 lbs.

I added these pics as well, the pride of panthers is from a game cam in Oct. 2013 on a large citrus grove 20 miles east of Ft.Myers. The guy almost lost his job because the picture was noticed by fish and game who sent a parcel of biologist to the property informing the company certain farming practices must be stopped because of the Panthers. The other picture is the infamous Bufo toad, the picture doesn't do it justice it was huge.

Re: panthers. Are you allowed to kill them if they are attacking your livestock? I sure hope so.

Not no but hell no, it's go directly to jail and do not pass go....But at least you would get a new room courteous of the Feds and not the state...Chance at cable TV...

It's a real problem Sid especially with cattle prices at their highest point in fifty years. And to pour salt on the wound the govt says more study is needed to see if cattle are indeed affected south of the Caloosahatchee river. But in their goal to introduce cats north of the Caloosahatchee river by our farm they have met with local ranches and will reimburse for the loss of cattle because it is expected from their research....Go figure...

    What can I say...B1G brethren...Lol

Actually I am just south of the Caloosahatchee...haven't seen any panthers but I have seen a couple of boars...none of them hitchhikers like you ran into, though.

I'm thinking a Q-beam is easier on my bill fold, the gen 3 models are pricey aren't they...

I have a gen 2 night vision monocular I use every now and then but it's a poor excuse for a mounted night vision scope...I'm surprised you have not had any issues with the population in your area, keep knocking that wood..

Ralph will those things come over the hood on a sedan and go through the window like a deer can?
