Lou says Skip is the best coach in the family. I don't know about that but East Carolina is a very good team. I think he will get an opportunity at a bigger school if he wants it. Maybe W. Virginia? 8) 8)
I think most of us took WV in the pool Gipper. But I think since the $$$$$ involved isn't that big I can still be happy for him. Good to talk with you tonight.
Well after yesterday there are more than a few Irish fans who are moving Skip up the ladder in terms of who will be the next ND coach. It, as always will be a timing issue, I think Weis will last the 5 years, even if he only goes 6-6 this year. So will the job open up at a time that Skip could take it? Plus he really is only in his 2nd year as a head coach at a Div 1 program and it's not even a BCS league. So I think even given his hot start at ECU I worry about his experience level. Ara always said he needed all of his 14 years experience as a HC to be able to handle the job at ND. Davie was out of his league with no HC experience, and Weis with no college experience or HC experience is struggling and learning on the job. Willingham was/is just a mediocre coach unsuited for the ND job. So I hope Weis succeeds and when the job opens again that Skip has had a another 5 or 6 years of success. Terry
SH <r>Terry,<br/> <br/> Staying in my less than optimistic mode, I'm keeping an eye on Skip. Went and searched his coaching record, history etc. With the exception of the hiccup at South Carolina years with Lou, it's a pretty impressive record. <br/> <br/> I know he doesn't have any HC experience at a big school but he did spend a lot of time at ND with Lou. <br/> <br/> If CW doesn't get it done this year, he looks like a solid choice to me. <br/> <br/> You know I follow recruiting closely and there is no excuse now with the talent we have on hand that this team should look the way they did last year and have started off this year. I'm hoping I am way off course and CW proves me wrong but the only thing I know absolutely <B><s></s>for sure <e></e></B>is that CW is a great recruiter, that's it.<br/> <br/> At this point all I can say is no more hype, SHOW ME! <E>:?</E></r>
Tim I'm with you, show me. Even with the situation that Willingham left him he should have done better last year, and it is year 4. In contrast Butch Davis won 4 games in his 1st year at UNC last year and his team performed pretty well even in the losses. Since you follow recruiting you would agree that the talent he inherited at UNC was less than great. Now in year 2 many Irish fans are conceding a road loss to UNC this year. What does that say about the relative ability of Weis and Davis, no way Davis has anywhere near the talent (based on recruiting rankings at least). 2009 is the year everybody was/is pointing to as our return to Nat'l Championship contention. That won't happen unless this year is a 9 win and look good doing it with no blowouts to USC or UM type of season. Terry
Re Davis and UNC <t>8/30 North Carolina 35 McNeese State 27<br/> <br/> It looks like not everyone is on a runaway train to greatness.</t>
I think Holtz would be a fantastic get for Notre Dame. I think the chances that he sticks around at ECU very long are slim. One thing I could see happening though is the Big East extending an offer for ECU to join along with another program (say, UCF) in football to give them 10 members. I don't know how that would work out since they have 16 members in basketball already but I would think it would be appealing for them with respect to the gridiron.
I don't see how the Big East could expand in football with 16 basketball schools already...18 would be unworkable as a league. There is always much speculation on what to do with the Big East though, even speculation that Big East Football playing teams split from the league, expand taking in ECU and UCF for starters and having a completely seperate all sports league leaving the rest of the BE to be an all-sports league minus football.
This is a part of the point I was trying to make earlier in other threads. One or two years does not a genious make. Let's take a deep breath and see what happens. If he loses to Elon is he still the next ND coach?
I agree kp, a ideally he needs to have a couple of years success at a BCS school in addition to what he's doing at ECU.
