How can you list Jeff Samardzija in the Top 15? Be serious. Herschel Walker was an Olympic level sprinter in the 100 meter dash, and he doesn't make the list? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/0606/gallery.greatathletes/content.1.html
TB, Read down below. We already have this topic going under the heading "15 Greatest College Athletes?" To summarize what we were saying, we think its ridiculous and a silly attempt by Sports Illustrated to get back their Irish readers, which we will never do, because they suck big, dead, dinosaur dorks... Samardzija, Ismael and Golic aren't even the best multi-sports stars who played at Notre Dame. Football News ranks George Gipp as the #4 greatest football player of all-time and Knute Rockne discovered him playing on the baseball team; and that's only one example among many. Schools like USC, UCLA, Stanford and Ohio State also have long lists of multi-sports stars too and your Hershel Walker example is also good one. If somebody had made that list in the 1950's, Jackie Jensen of Cal would have been on there as well. We could go on and on, but the bottom line is: SI sucks and we won't buy it... ..............Irish Alzheimers......JO'Co
TB, Walker was the greatest college runner I have ever seen in the SEC and one of the top 3 I have ever seen in college football. Note I said "college" because Emmitt was a much better pro. How can HW not be on this list?
That list raises a lot of questions, and as I said you could certainly put together another completely different list of 15 and justify it! Walker was a great college football player, but while he did posses sprinter speed, did he in fact run track at UGA? If he didn't that would eliminate him based on the criteria that they have to be stars in 2 sports. Terry
Pardon me for starting a new thread on a topic previously discussed. Shows how much I pay attention, my bad. Terry, HW did run track in College.
I saw Barry run plenty of times and when it was 3rd and 3 on the 7 in a tight hard fought game no way in hell would I take Barry over Emmitt. Early in the game on a surprise 2nd and 10 run from your own 40 maybe Barry was a better back...better open field moves but Emmitt was much more consistent and dependable in the tough situations that you always get in the NFL. Then again.....Emmitt had Aikman behind him and Barry had.....hmmm....I'm not too sure. Let's put Brown, Sanders and Walker in my top three RBS of all-time in CFB but then there's Simpson, Campbell, Faulk, Alexander, Williams in a group close behind along with oldtimers Doak Walker and Red Grange.
Another two-sport star (baseball-football) that Notre Dame fans would care to forget: Anthony Davis of USC. One of my friends was Davis' American Legion baseball coach and he claimed that AD was the best player he ever coached. ..
