How many times have great QB's at the end of their careers failed to be able to hang it up while they are on top. Farve led the Packers the NFC championship game, he didn't have a great game vs the Giants, but he had a great year and really when he retired he went out on top.

Now there is all this talk that he wants to play again. Seems to me to be a no win situation for the Packers. They are ready to move on, have a hopefully young QB who is ready to start and lead them for the next 10 years and have prepared to do just that. If Farve comes back to the Pack then Aaron Rodgers just goes back to the bench, if he has a bad year then they have the ugly task of maybe sitting him down and letting Rodgers play to get some experience. Favre isn't likely to take kindly to sitting the bench. If they tell him no and he goes someplace else and has a great year and Rogers struggles, welllllll........they will be criticized heavily.

I guess working on the farm/ranch down home isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Maybe the Packers will trade him to Detroit, that should finish him off!! :)

I have a feeling I may get seriously nauseous before this fiasco is through.

Only in todays 24/7 news cycle would a crowd of 100 people be classified as the fans coming to Brets defense. If there were 60K at a Bret for QB rally then that would be something, but a 100 fans..pshaw.

What a shame this story is keeping us from hearing "real" sports stories on ESPN like which city it "Titletown." I can't wait for football season to start....which means that hockey is just around the corner :D

I tend to agree with Whitlock about what the Packers' brass needs to do. Let Favre come back and all the pressure's on him. If you don't allow him to then all the pressure's on you.

I have made my opinions of Favre well known here. I think he's a very good QB, perhaps even ranking between 8-10 all time. I also like Favre's personality off the field, or I did anyway. The position he has put the Packers in is uneviable and the proposition, as has been reported, that he wants to go play for the Vikings could be disastrous for GB management. The Vikes are a QB away from being championship material. If the Vikes win it all with Favre at the helm after all this, everyone in the GB front office may as well turn in their resignations. I am going to be sick of hearing about this by the time it's over but it will be some serious drama.

The hardest thing for an athlete to walk away from is not money. It's applause.

If Farve takes the 20 million to stay retired I will lose what ever respect I had for him.

I have a different view of that possible scenario. I see it as a Johnny-come-lately effort to do what the Astros owner did with Roger Clemens.....Employ your signature Hall-of-Fame player as a team representative in various capacities over a long-term period for a worthwhile sum. Who knows what's going through the minds of the people involved? Maybe Brett likes the idea of a continuing connection to the only team he's ever played for as a pro in return for very nice compensation. Maybe management recognizes that they coulda shoulda done this earlier but now have extra incentive to tie him up.

I think it makes business sense for both sides.......IF (a big if) Brett sees the value in it.

I have a different take as well. I see Favre as a two bit hustler. I see him as a guy who woke up the day after he retired and no one was cheering for him and he couldn't accept it. I think its deplorable how he is attempting to rob the Packers. I think he has compromised his reputation to chase a few more dollars. I think the fact that he wants to play at all is ridiculous after his tearful farewells but the fact that he only wants to play for in division rivals is sticking it to his old team.

He has no character and has obviously misjudged his self importance. The fact that he may take $20 mil to go away is extortion. He should slink back into the bayou from whence he came.

I don't see the connection. Astros always wanted Roger to come back and when they made the deal that paid him $$ + the personal services contract it was to get him back on the field. In the Packers case they don't want him to come back and they are willing to pay him to stay retired. I don't thin Drayton would have paid Roger to stay retired.

I blame Farve for this whole mess. For the last 3 years he's said he might not play again after each season, and made the Packers wait and wait till he made up his mind. Which kept them from doing anything to solidify the QB position till he made up his mind. When he finally says he's retired and they make a commitment to Rogers he waits till late in the game and wants back in as a QB. It's his right, but he put them in a no win situation. Not to mention he's said it's not about the money, he's owed 12 million if they don't release him. So if it's not about the money why take 20 millioin to stay retired.

George makes a valid point. I tend to agree somewhat although I don't have the same negative feelings about Favre, primarily because I'm only observing and opinionating without any feelings about it one way or the other.

If I were the Packers I would pay him the $12 mil and glue him to the bench all season.
