It seems that most football fans under 50 think of GTech as more novelty than anything. However, fans that are just a bit older and on up seem to just freaking hate Georgia Tech. Were they that bad in the 60s or 50s or something? I mean, I've never met an older guy who didn't just hate Georgia Tech. I did have my own experiences with them at the ND-GT game, but I figured that's just because we were in town. Have they always been awful?
Corey, Georgia Tech was very good in the 40's, 50's and 60's. They won 4 National Championships before the 60's and were one of the founders of the SEC. Bobby Dodd was their coach at that time and is of course a Hall of Fame coach. In 1964 they withdrew from the SEC. Here's a link explaining their leaving. I didn't really know the full reasons as this article explained. I am sure there is still a lot of resentment over this breakup and also about every school had a losing record to the Yellow Jackets at this point, the exception of course being Alabama and the Bear. Here's the link, I may post a couple of other links below. http://cecilbuffington.com/catalog_40.html
Here's another article and I was wrong about all their NC's coming before 1960, they shared one with Colorado in 1990 with Colorado. http://www.macon.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/bobby-pope/article30145833.html
I honestly don't remember those controversies between Coach Dodd and Coach Bryant. We had moved to Virginia in 1959 when I was 6. My dad was a football coach in Norfolk, and an avid Alabama fan but being in Virginia we didn't get much news about off of the field stuff up there. I don't have strong feeling one way or the other about Ga Tech. :?
I do remember the controversy about the games and personal foul calls. What I don't remember, likely never knew, was Bobby Dodds position on scholarship players and why they left the SEC. I wish the Yellow Jackets were still in the SEC.
