Karras was on defense for the Lions when Tom Dempsey kicked his famous 63-yard field goal. He said there was no way anyone could kick that far, so they just stood back and let him kick to see if he could really do it...

Then there was the great betting scandal. The NFL suspended Paul Hornung of the Packers for betting $500 on games. When reporters asked Karras for his opinion of what Hornung had done, he replied that it was no big deal, because "Everybody bets on the games." When they asked him if he bet on games too, he said, "sure I do." So they suspended Karras for one year too...

When Karras was in the Monday Night Football booth back in 1975 or thereabouts, Howard Cosell asked him if a team has a tendency to let up after clinching a division title. Karras replied, "how the hell would I know Howard, I played for Detroit."
